Russia, while not a geopolitical competitor, provides Westerners w/a relatable example showing that it is possible to have leaders that prioritize their own people and culture, that build churches rather than blaspheme them, that defend traditional values rather than wage war against them.
Westerners have been trained to think these things are impossible, and the regime’s power is built on that assumption. China is too culturally foreign and generally incomprehensible to ever serve as an effective example for Western populations, thus Russia is perceived (correctly) as the greater threat.
