RACISM COPS
Katie E Mettler tweeted: In Dec. 2018, a group of Black and Latino officers sued their own police department in Prince George's County, alleging systemic racism on the force.
In the years since, the county has spent at least $17.6 million fighting them.
The only reason we are able to report that figure is because of the awesome power of public records laws.
@Rachel_Chason and I had heard costs were mounting, so two months ago, we filed an MPIA request for invoices that showed how much officials had spent litigating the case.
What we discovered in the weeks that followed was astounding.
Confusion among officials on the total spending. Missing paperwork. Misattributed invoices. Millions of dollars spent beyond what was agreed to in contracts with Venable, the private DC law firm the county had hired.
It wasn't until this weekend that county officials were able to definitively account for the topline numbers:
More than $15.6 million to Venable and $1.9 million to outside experts.
We independently reviewed the invoices to confirm those figures were accurate.
Residents and lawmakers are frustrated by the mounting bills. But, they told us, they are more upset by what they perceive as contradictory messaging from leaders.
At the same time the county was fighting the suit, it was also pledging to reform the police department.
Organizers like @KrystalOriadha of @pgchangemakers, who sat on a police reform work group, are calling on leaders to settle the suit.
“If you really know there are issues, and you really want to solve them,” she said. “Come to the table.”
SHE QUOTE TWEETS: Did you know Prince George’s County has spent more than $13 million defending a racist police culture? #PGCCouldBe investing more in emergency rental assistance! #CancelTheRent
SHE GOES ON: I wouldn't be a true @postlocal reporter if I didn't use this as an opportunity to emphasize the importance of supporting local news and advocating for strong public records laws.
Without both, taxpayers don't know how their money is being spent.
