**College DRAMA over Gaza drama
(CNN or theSkimm Mon 4-29-24) CNN: US colleges have been using law enforcement — along with academic suspensions and, for at least one school, expulsion — to warn against participating in violent pro-Palestinian demonstrations. A central demand of many protests is that the universities divest their funds from Israel-linked companies and support a ceasefire in Gaza. So far, many universities have refused to budge, and some experts doubt the effectiveness of such a campaign. Also over the weekend, students and children staged a display of solidarity (commie buzzword) at a demonstration in southern Gaza to express gratitude for the support seen on US college campuses in recent weeks.
theSkimm: As universities crack down on anti-war protests, more emerge.
It’s been nearly two weeks since students at Columbia University began setting up an encampment to protest the war in Gaza. They’ve demanded their school to divest from companies that “profit from Israeli apartheid, genocide and occupation in Palestine.” Amid reports of antisemitism, Columbia’s president called the NYPD to clear the encampment leading to over 100 arrests. Students at other universities have followed suit with more than a dozen demonstrations surfacing at other campuses.
Student encampments have popped up at schools across the country: Emory University, Brown University, Yale, University of Southern California, and more. Police have shown up at some campuses wearing riot gear and have physically engaged with demonstrators. At least 800 people have been arrested since the protests began. At least 275 of those arrests happened this past weekend alone. One expert said it’s not surprising Columbia's protest inspired demonstrations at other campuses, considering its proximity to national media and coverage of arrests.
It’s not clear when and if the student protests will slow down. The severity of the police response has fueled conversations about balancing free speech and safety on campuses. One school, the University of Southern California, canceled its main commencement ceremony, citing safety concerns.
Tensions on college campuses have been high following the start of the Israel-Hamas war amid reports of antisemitism and Islamophobia. Those tensions appear to be reaching a boiling point as this wave of student demonstrations interrupts campus life.

Biden and Netanyahu Had Another Phone Call About Rafah. Here's What They Said
*Middle East drama
(CNN or theSkimm Mon 4-29-24) President Joe Biden spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by phone on Sunday to discuss the release of hostages in Gaza.
NOT READ: Biden reiterated his “clear position” on a potential Israeli invasion of Rafah, where more than 1 million displaced Palestinians are sheltering, a source told CNN. The Biden administration has told its Israeli counterparts that it wants to see a clear and actionable plan on how they would protect civilians in the region. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will also visit the Middle East this week to discuss with leaders the ceasefire and hostage talks between Israel and Hamas that remain stalled despite months of mediation by Qatar and Egypt.

*Trump still winning
(CNN or theSkimm Mon 4-29-24) Former President Donald Trump continues to hold an advantage over President Joe Biden as their campaigns — and Trump’s criminal trial — move forward, according to a new CNN poll. Trump’s support in the poll among registered voters holds steady at 49% compared to Biden at 43%. The poll, which was conducted among 1,200 random adults, also revealed most respondents felt Trump’s term as president was a success, while a broad majority says Biden’s has so far been a failure. In an effort to reach potential voters, Biden poked fun at his own age Saturday at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner and took jabs at his predecessor. Biden last week also offered his most robust commitment to the general election debates, saying in an interview that he would be “happy to” debate Trump.
**Severe weather! TORNADOES!
(CNN or theSkimm Mon 4-29-24) Millions of people in the central US are under severe weather alerts today as storms threaten tornadoes, heavy rain and large hail across several states. The same weather system has killed at least four people, including an infant, following a devastating tornado outbreak in Oklahoma. Forecasts show that unsettled weather is expected to continue across the midsection of the country through the week. Cities including Dallas and Austin in Texas, Oklahoma City and Tulsa in Oklahoma, Wichita and Topeka in Kansas and the Kansas City metropolitan area are under severe weather watches as storms push eastward across the southern Plains.
(CNN or theSkimm Mon 4-29-24) Where people are on alert… The Midwest. More than 100 tornadoes hit Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Iowa over the weekend, leaving at least four people dead and severe structural damage. 18 million people have also reportedly been on watch for flash flooding from storms in parts of Missouri to Louisiana with warnings continuing into today.
Yesterday, Red Cross Oklahoma said it’s opening a shelter in Sulphur, one of the hardest hit towns by tornadoes. It’s unclear how many people remain injured.
*Kenya dam burst: Lots dead!
(CNN or theSkimm Mon 4-29-24) Dozens were killed after a dam burst in southern Kenya today, sweeping away homes and vehicles as the country grapples with weeks of heavy rains and flash floods. Rescue crews are digging through the mud and debris hoping to find survivors near Mai Mahiu, in Kenya’s Nakuru County, Gov. Susan Kihika told CNN. Images and video from Nairobi, which has been badly impacted, show people stranded on rooftops or salvaging what they can from destroyed homes. More than 130,000 people have been affected as floods swept through almost half of Kenya in recent months, local officials said.
*Measles is back: Thanks, immigrants!
(CNN or theSkimm Mon 4-29-24) 128 measles cases have been reported in the US this year, according to the latest data from the CDC. Measles was declared eliminated in the US in 2000, but the rapid rise in cases poses a threat to that disease elimination status, the agency says.
*Pope Francis is a LIBERAL!
(CNN or theSkimm Mon 4-29-24) QUOTE: “The world needs artists.” LIKE A HOLE IN THE HEAD! — Pope Francis, sharing remarks during a historic visit to Venice’s contemporary art festival. Despite his recent health concerns, the trip saw the pontiff leave Rome to visit a female prison and rehabilitate the reputation of a Catholic nun artist known for making politically charged art.
**BASED Kristi Noem!
(CNN or theSkimm Mon 4-29-24) Who’s on the defense… South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R). She’s come under fire after the Guardian obtained parts of her upcoming memoir in which Noem talks about shooting and killing her 14-month old dog for being “untrainable” and aggressive towards people. People on social media reportedly began questioning if Noem is the right person to be former President Trump’s pick for vice president. She responded by saying the incident shows she’s “never” passed her “responsibilities to anyone else to handle.” As for other contenders to be Trump's VP, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum’s (R) name appears to be floating to the top of the list. Trump’s team reportedly believes Burgum would be a safe choice who could bring in moderate voters. Whoever Trump picks could spend a lot of time filling in for the former president on the campaign trail as Trump’s criminal trial in Manhattan plays out (which resumes tomorrow).
**Cosmetic needles spread HIV!?
(CNN or theSkimm Mon 4-29-24) What can be scary… Cosmetic needles. Last week, the CDC said three women contracted HIV after getting “vampire facials” at an unlicensed medical spa in New Mexico after completing a yearslong investigation. Officials believe these cases could mark the first time the virus has been contracted via cosmetic needles. The facials are performed after a client’s blood is withdrawn, separated into platelet-rich plasma, and then re-injected into the face using microneedles. In its investigation the CDC found that the spa was reusing single-use equipment as it was performing “vampire facials” and highlighted how important infection control practices are. As for the spa, it hasn’t performed any “vampire facials” or anything else since officials forced it to close in 2018.
