Other details about the wannabe cop killer (Hake News, Hr 2)
CLIP 12AB: Convicted Felon Deonte Murray Charged In Compton Ambush Shooting Of 2 LA Deputies (CBS Los Angeles)
The suspect fled in a black Mercedes Benz sedan after running off. Investigators discovered that type of vehicle had been stolen Sept. 1 in a carjacking where the driver was shot. Photographs of the carjacking suspect seemed to match images from the ambush, Wegener said, strengthening a connection between the two cases.
On Sept. 15, an investigator spotted the suspect driving another vehicle and tried to stop him. The suspect threw a gun out of the car during a pursuit before abandoning the vehicle in the city of Lynwood. The suspect ran off and was ultimately captured after a nearly nine-hour standoff with police. The black Mercedes was found nearby.
Ballistics testing of the gun — a so-called ghost gun that is homemade and unregistered — that was discarded during the pursuit showed it was the one used in the attack on the deputies, Wegener said.
In recent weeks, demonstrators have marched to protest fatal shootings in the area, where deputies killed a Black man on Aug. 31 and a Black teenager in 2018.
REMEMBER: After the ambush, a handful of protesters gathered outside the hospital where the deputies were treated and tried to block the emergency room entrance. Videos from the scene recorded protesters shouting expletives at police and at least one yelling “I hope they ... die.”
ALSO REMEMBER: A Los Angeles police officer was attacked Saturday night inside the Harbor Community police station in San Pedro.
The assailant was recorded on surveillance video as he knocked the officer to the ground inside the station, pistol-whipped him with his own gun and pointed it at his chest. The officer is recovering from his injuries.
Other details about reparations (Hake News, Hr 2)
The U.S. Congress in 2019 held its first hearing on “reparations” (what a joke!). Hearing on Slavery Reparations | C-SPAN.org
Actor Danny Glover, author Ta-Nehisi Coates, Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), and others testified on slavery reparations before a House Judiciary subcommittee. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), who sponsored a bill calling for a commission to study and provide reparations proposals, talked about the legacy of slavery and quoted current-day statistics on African Americans.
Author Ta-Nehisi Coates addressed comments made by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) in opposition to reparations, telling the subcommittee, “For a century after the Civil War, black people were subjected to a relentless campaign of terror, a campaign that extended well into the lifetime of Majority Leader McConnell.” WHAT A LIAR.
In July, the city council of Asheville in North Carolina unanimously voted to establish a Community Reparations Commission that will put funds and resources toward benefiting the city’s Black residents.
Back to CA Reparations
The reparation bill was among this year’s priorities for the California Legislative Black Caucus, along with capping parole periods and repealing the state’s ban on affirmative action. Voters will decide next month whether to bring back affirmative action when they vote on Proposition 16.
California joined the United States as a “free state” in 1850. But the state Legislature in 1852 passed the California Fugitive Slave Law, which legalized white people keeping the slaves they brought to California before statehood as long as they are taken back to the South.
And up to just a few decades ago, many cities in the state kept Black residents out of owning homes in desirable neighborhoods in a practice called “redlining.”
The federal government gave $20,000 to more than 80,000 Japanese Americans for its role in detaining them in internment camps. North Carolina set aside $10 million for those forcibly sterilized by the state’s eugenics program between 1929 and 1974.
