WOMAN TREASURER: Who’s breaking green ceilings…

On Tuesday, President Biden announced his intent to appoint Marilynn Malerba, the lifetime chief of the Mohegan Tribe, to the position of US treasurer.

As treasurer, Malerba will oversee the US Mint, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Fort Knox, and liaise with the Federal Reserve. She will also serve as an advisor to the treasury secretary (hi, Janet Yellen) on community development and public engagement. 

Malerba will also oversee a newly created office — the Treasury Office of Tribal and Native Affairs —which Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced on Tuesday while visiting the Rosebud Sioux Tribe in South Dakota. This office will coordinate with tribal relations within the Treasury Department.

NOT READ: Malerba’s signature will be on every US dollar that’s printed, making her the first Native American to have their signature appear on US currency. And her appointment will add Yellen’s signature to every dollar printed, too. Hint: Although Yellen has been serving as treasury secretary since January 2021, her signature wasn’t able to be added until the treasurer position was filled.

Malerba is currently the chief of the Mohegan Tribe, which is based in southeastern Connecticut. She is the first woman to be elected to the position and has been serving a lifetime appointment since 2010. She also has a role as a member of the Treasury Tribal Advisory Committee. 

Prior to her Tribal Council work, she had a long career as a registered nurse. Before becoming chief, she was a chair of the Mohegan Tribal Council and served in Tribal Government.

Unlike the position of US treasury secretary, where Yellen is the first woman to serve, the treasurer position has not been a boy’s club. All of the US treasurers for the last 60 years have been women. Malerba’s appointment looks to continue that legacy. And, her appointment doesn’t have to be confirmed by the Senate.

(Morning Brew) The best performing currency this year is…the Russian ruble? Strange but true. The ruble is up about 35% in 2022, and is at its strongest level vs. the US dollar since 2015. The currency was expected to collapse after the West applied sanctions in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and initially it did. But it’s since mounted a comeback thanks to a) continued demand for Russian energy exports, particularly in Asia, and b) capital controls intended to prop up demand for the ruble.

CIGARETTES

(TheSkimm) Cigarettes could take a hit, thanks to a potential new nicotine rule.

In April, the [corrupt] FDA proposed a ban on menthol cigarettes — the last remaining flavor in the US market (other than tobacco). Yesterday, the Biden admin announced a proposed rule requiring tobacco companies to reduce nicotine levels in cigarettes to minimally or nonaddictive levels. Only one other country in the world has taken a step like this: liberal woman-led New Zealand. 

And this is a big deal because… 

It could be one of the biggest gov attempts to stamp out smoking in decades. Cigarette smoking is [supposedly] the leading cause of preventable disability, disease, and death in the US. And accounts for about 1 in 5 deaths in the country — more than 480,000 people each year. FDA officials say the move could “protect” future generations and could even help “wean” existing smokers off of cigarettes. MAMA! 

What’s next?

By next year, the [corrupt] FDA will formally publish the proposed role. Then it goes through public comments and edits. The tobacco industry could fight the rule in court. But one former FDA official said the rule could have “the greatest impact” in “the history of public health.” [public health a commie buzzword] 

theSkimm: For years, the gov has pushed to reduce cancer deaths [but they talk out of both sides of their mouths, they like the people to be corrupt, sick, even dying enough to “need” them]. Now for the first time, its decision to take on Big Tobacco companies could lead them closer to that goal. 

[I covered recently how they said blacks, gays, and POC (black and brown) minors smoke menthols and flavored cigarettes… and the FDA types wanted to ban them or limt them… ] 

CONFUSING INFO: UVALDE

(Morning Brew) Texas police officers panned for inaction during shooting. Steve McCraw, director of the Texas [State] Department of Public Safety, called law enforcement’s response to the Uvalde school shooting an “abject failure” in a state Senate hearing yesterday. McCraw said that police could have stopped the gunmale three minutes after he entered the school, instead of waiting more than an hour to storm the classroom where he was shooting. The on-site commander put officers’ lives before those of the children, McCraw said. 

FROM HAKE NEWS: LAME EMOTIONAL PANDERING… 

(CNN) QUOTE: “You could never ask a child to go back or a teacher to go back to that school. Ever.” [WHY NOT??] -- The mayor of Uvalde, Texas, saying Robb Elementary school will be demolished, after a gunmale (a murderer 18yo Salvador Rolando Ramos) opened fire inside a classroom, killing 19 children and two teachers on May 24. 

NOT READ: On Tuesday, Mayor Don McLaughlin sharply criticized the authorities leading the investigation into the shooting and said he and other city officials have never been briefed on how the investigation is going. The mayor also said he requested body camera video from all agencies that responded to the shooting and hasn't received any.

BTW: (A different headline: Uvalde mayor accuses state of leaking records to make local police look bad | The Texas Tribune)  Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin spoke during a City Council meeting on Tuesday. McLaughlin accused state authorities of selectively releasing information about their investigation into the Uvalde shooting last month to disparage local law enforcement.

Who’s facing repercussions…

(TheSkimm) Bill Cosby. A Los Angeles County jury has found the comedian guilty of sexually abusing a 16-year-old girl in 1975. More than 60 women have accused Cosby of sexual assault or misconduct — dating back to the 1960s. In 2018 he was convicted of assault, serving just under three years in a Pennsylvania state prison before his conviction was overturned on appeal. The survivor and her legal team called it a victory, while Cosby’s team argued it’s a win for him because they didn’t get the punitive damages.

(TheSkimm) Deshaun Watson. The Cleveland Browns quarterback reached a settlement yesterday with 20 of the 24 women who sued and accused him of sexual misconduct. Watson — who denies the allegations — is accused of harassing, assaulting, and touching the women during massage therapy sessions. He still faces a potential suspension by the NFL. The lawyer representing the women expects the remaining four lawsuits to continue on.
