Beirut, Lebanon

Drudge headlines on Beirut explosion

Drudge headlines on Beirut explosion

(Drudge) EXPLOSIONS ROCK BEIRUT, WIDESPREAD DESTRUCTION, THOUSANDS OF CASUALTIES…

— Wednesday around 6 PM local time, an explosion flipped cars, flattened most of at least one building on a port shore in the Lebanese capital.

(Drudge / Far-left AP) The Lebanese Red Cross claims over 100 were killed, and over 4,000 injured, scores missing! 300,000 homeless...

The blast appeared to have been triggered by a fire that touched off a cargo of ammonium nitrate that had been stored at the port for years, though it was unclear what sparked the fire. Hitting with the force of an earthquake, it was the most powerful explosion ever seen in the city, which was split in half by the 1975-1990 civil war and has endured conflicts with neighboring Israel and periodic bombings and terror attacks.

TRUMP: Was a bomb of some kind...

(Drudge / Yahoo via AFP) - President Donald Trump said Tuesday that US generals had told him that the powerful explosions which rocked Beirut appeared to have been caused by a "bomb of some kind."

"It looks like a terrible attack," Trump told reporters at the White House.

"It would seem like it, based on the explosion. I met with some of our great generals and they just seemed to feel that it was," he said.

"This was not some kind of a manufacturing explosion type of event. It seems to be, according to them -- they would know better than I would -- but they seem to think it was an attack.

"It was a bomb of some kind, yes."

Lebanese officials have not described the explosions which rocked the capital as an attack.

Asked about Trump's remarks, a Pentagon spokesman told AFP "we don't have anything for you" and "you will have to reach out to the White House for clarification." WEAK!

(Drudge) Lebanon PM blames deadly blast on ammonium nitrate in unsecured warehouse…

Prime Minister Hassan Diab said 2,750 tonnes of the agricultural fertilizer ammonium nitrate that had been stored for years in a Beirut portside warehouse had blown up, sparking "a disaster in every sense of the word."

"What happened today will not pass without accountability," said Diab. "Those responsible for this catastrophe will pay the price."

General Security chief Abbas Ibrahim said "highly explosive material" that had been confiscated years earlier had been stored in the warehouse.

(NBC News) Prime Minister Hassan Diab said, "I will not rest until we find the person responsible for what happened, to hold him accountable and impose the most severe penalties."

Diab said it was "unacceptable" that a shipment of ammonium nitrate estimated at 2,750 tons had been in warehouse for six years without "preventive measures" to protect it. The chemical compound, which is commercially available, is used widely in fertilizers and explosives.
