Israel hit a refugee camp, targeting a commander

(CNN & theSkimm Wed. 11/1/23) Israel’s military confirmed it hit the Jabaliya refugee camp in Gaza (left catastrophic damage, massive craters amid densely populated buildings). Targeting: A key Hamas commander (Hamas denies it). Israel said the strike killed the commander, describing him as one of the leaders of the October 7th attack. Israel also reportedly said Hamas had been using the area as a command center, adding that dozens of militants were killed. But officials in Gaza said the attack in Jabaliya — the territory's largest refugee camp — killed more than 50 Palestinian civilians, mostly women and children, and injured hundreds more. Israel accused Hamas of hiding behind civilians and reiterated calls for Palestinians to evacuate south — even as Israeli airstrikes continue there.

Last night, Gaza's telecommunications officials said that their internet and communications been cut off again (severely disrupted). The UN stated more than 3,500 "children" have been killed (I think half the population is under 18, which means there could be plenty of underage terrorists, if you will), but the Gaza Health Ministry said the [overall??] death toll is at more than 8,500. Far-left British Do-Gooder NGO Save the Children (founded by two English women 100 years ago) called it the deadliest conflict of any year for “children” since 2019.

There’s growing concern about the spread of infectious diseases due to the crowded, unclean conditions and a lack of clean water. Doctors reportedly doing surgeries in corridors with limited supplies and electricity amid Israeli airstrikes. Meanwhile, aid’s slow to trickle in through the Rafah crossing, the Biden admin “trying” to get 100 trucks of aid in each day this week. This morning, in a deal brokered by Qatar, Egypt agreed to allow dozens of foreign passport holders through the Rafah crossing, and a small group of injured Palestinians for treatment.

Israel focused on targeting Hamas, allegedly embedding command centers in civilian areas. Now, as the Palestinian death toll mounts, the international community increasingly pressuring Israel to limit response to the October 7th attack.

  • Yesterday, the Senate confirmed Far-Left Obama-Holdover Jack Lew (Not a Christian) to be the next US ambassador to Israel in a 53-43 vote, largely along party lines, Republicans concerned Lew’s role in the Obama’s Failed Iran nuclear deal (supposedly too lenient to Iran, RME — Trump seemingly rightly abandoned it, but Biden / Obama III rejoined it?).

  • A junior (3rd year student — Patrick Dai, asian-looking New Yorker) at Cornell University has been arrested over the “antisemitic” threats made to Jewish students at the school (talked about slitting throats).

  • NOT READ: (CNN & theSkimm Wed. 11/1/23) The extremist FBI director Chris Wray testified yesterday that “antisemitic” threats in the US have reached “historic levels.”

    • CNN: FBI Director Christopher Wray said Tuesday that antisemitism is reaching “historic levels” in the US as the war between Israel and Hamas intensifies. “Our statistics would indicate that for a group that represents only about 2.4% of the American public, they account for something like 60% of all religious-based hate crimes,” Wray said of the Jewish American population. The Anti-Defamation League reported over 300 antisemitic incidents in the US since the Hamas attack on October 7. College campuses are seeing an increase in antisemitic activity as well, like the threats against Cornell University’s Jewish community. Wray said that the FBI is tackling the rise in antisemitism through a series of law enforcement efforts that include joint terrorism task forces, hate crime investigations and intelligence sharing.

  • NOT READ: (CNN & theSkimm Wed. 11/1/23) Yesterday, Bolivia cut diplomatic ties with Israel over the war with Hamas — among the first countries to do so. Chile and Colombia recalled their ambassadors after alleging human rights abuses in Gaza.

Also Not Read: More mess re: Israel-Palestine CRAP

(Not CNN but theSkimm Wed. 11/1/23) Yesterday, protesters interrupted Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s testimony in the Senate, calling for a cease-fire and for the US to stop sending funds to Israel. For weeks, tens of thousands have shown up to pro-Palestinian protests across the US — including in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago.

There appears to be a discrepancy between US polling and the scale of protests. A new poll found that about half of Americans sympathize with Israel, while only 10% sympathize with Palestinians. About 26% said their sympathy for each side was “about equal.” It mimics other polls since the October 7th attack consistently showing broad support for Israel in the US (see: this, this, and this) — though that changes across age groups. Those polled tended to think Israel’s military response to the attacks was justified. Meanwhile, support for President Biden among Arab Americans has plummeted, one year out from Election Day.

Maine killer

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 11/1/23) New details are emerging about the US Army reservist (ROBERT CARD) who authorities say killed 18 people in Lewiston, Maine, last week — including previous warning signs about him from the Army and his family. The Army in July said that the 40-year-old gunman “should not have a weapon, handle ammunition, and not participate in live fire activity,” after he was seen “behaving erratically” and sent for an evaluation at an Army hospital, an Army spokesperson said. Additionally, several attempts were made by officers to check on him weeks before the mass shootings, raising questions over authorities’ handling of the warnings and his access to the firearms. Attention is also being drawn to Maine gun laws, which do not prohibit a person from buying a gun based strictly on a mental health diagnosis or treatment.

Sickle cell treatment!

(Not CNN but theSkimm Wed. 11/1/23) What’s closer to getting a new treatment… Sickle cell disease. Yesterday, an FDA panel recommended a gene editing therapy to treat the rare blood disorder that disproportionately affects [b]lack Americans (average life expectancy for the afflicted 40-60 years!). Exa-cel uses CRISPR (heh) technology to change specific parts of a patient’s DNA. In this case, health experts say exa-cel could free the 20,000 Americans with severe sickle cell disease of excruciating pain. The FDA wants to learn more about the treatment’s potential long-term effects before deciding whether to approve exa-cel — a decision that's expected in December. If approved, it’s unclear how much exa-cel would cost. However, it would be the first therapy to treat an illness using the CRISPR gene-editing tech.

So-called ‘health care’ (Take care of yourself, b/c no one else will!)

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 11/1/23) The cost of job-based health care coverage will see a steep rise in 2024 due to stubbornly high inflation, benefits consultants say. Companies plan to shoulder most of the increase, but many workers could also feel the pinch in the form of higher premiums and out-of-pocket costs for care. Workers will learn just how much more they’ll pay during their employers’ open enrollment period, which typically takes place at this time. Medical providers are pushing insurers for larger cost increases to cover the higher costs they endured over the last few years, experts say. There has also been a significant uptick in the use of specialty drugs, particularly those for diabetes and weight loss, which is driving up the average monthly cost per member for this class of drugs.

Italy floods!

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 11/1/23) A storm that brought heavy rain and violent winds to northern Italy on Tuesday sent rapid floods through central Milan and caused Lake Como to breach its banks. Several waterside bars were flooded at the lake — a popular tourist attraction — while civil protection authorities were forced to pump out water from areas nearby and erect mobile barriers. Parts of Milan became inaccessible, while social media posts showed water gushing down stairs into underground train stations and pedestrians falling down or clinging to poles during strong gusts of wind. Tuscany, in Central Italy, was also affected by heavy rainfall and landslides.
