Hostage deal between Israel-Hamas (thx America and Qatar)

(Not CNN but theSkimm Wed. 11/22/23) Israel and Hamas agreed to a hostage deal.

Yesterday, both sides approved the deal brokered by the US, Qatar, and Egypt. Hamas agreed to release 50 of the more than 240 people it took hostage on October 7th, specifically women and children. Three Americans are expected to be among the hostages released. In exchange, Israel agreed to pause fighting for at least four days to allow fuel and other humanitarian aid into Gaza. Israel will also release 150 Palestinian women and children held in Israeli prisons. Next up: Israeli citizens have 24 hours to appeal the deal to the Supreme Court. The agreement could go into effect as early as tomorrow. That's the first phase.

Israel could extend the cease-fire in exchange for Hamas’s release of more hostages. Israel says it would add an extra day to the pause in fighting, for every additional 10 captives that Hamas releases. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his government is “committed to bringing all of the hostages home.” Hamas called the deal a “humanitarian truce.” In a statement, Qatar's lead negotiator reportedly said the priority is now “to ensure that the terms of the agreement are respected” while also working on a longer cease-fire. President Biden welcomed the deal, saying he has “no higher priority than ensuring the safety of Americans held hostage.”

There’s been growing international pressure for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war, which has killed over 13,000 Palestinians and over 1,200 Israelis. Now, this deal marks a major diplomatic breakthrough in a conflict that’s nearing its sixth week.

CNN: Israel and Hamas on Tuesday reached a breakthrough deal for the release of hostages seized by Hamas in exchange for a pause in fighting in Gaza. The agreement would see the release of at least 50 hostages — women and children — in exchange for a four-day truce in Israel’s air and ground campaign. The truce, meanwhile, would also allow the entry of “a larger number of humanitarian convoys and relief aid,” according to a statement from Qatar, a key negotiator of the deal. The announcement has been greeted with relief and heightened anticipation from the families of those taken hostage, who now await further news about their loved ones. Hamas is holding 239 hostages captive in Gaza, including foreign nationals from 26 countries, the Israeli military said.

Watch out for your doggos!

(Not CNN but theSkimm Wed. 11/22/23) A mystery illness. In the last couple of months, hundreds of dogs in at least seven states have fallen sick with an infectious respiratory disease. Veterinarians say symptoms include coughing, sneezing, and eye and nose discharge. Some dogs have died from the illness. The disease could be linked to a new bacterial infection, but researchers are investigating the cause. For now, vets recommend that owners make sure their pets are up-to-date on vaccines, limit their exposure to other dogs, and call their vet if they notice symptoms.

‘Transgender’ Roman emperor??

(Not CNN but theSkimm Wed. 11/22/23) This one. Yesterday, the BBC reported that a British museum determined emperor Elagabalus was a trans woman. Her gender identity has long been contested among academics. But classical texts claim the emperor — who ruled the Roman Empire from AD 218 to AD 222 — said “call me not Lord, for I am a Lady.” Now, the museum says it'll relabel Elagabalus' display to honor her preferred pronouns.

Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio gonna be in another Karate Kid movie, together

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 11/22/23) Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio (the original Karate Kid) are looking to cast a new young person to be another Karate Kid for a new movie out Dec 2024.

Macchio will reprise his role as Daniel LaRusso, whom he played in the original “Karate Kid” film trilogy starting in 1984. Chan will return to the role of Mr. Han, a kung fu master based on Mr. Miyagi, who coached Jaden Smith’s Dre Parker in the 2010 remake movie.

Alaska landslide

(CNN not theSkimm Wed. 11/22/23) At least three people were found dead and multiple others are believed to be missing after a large landslide covered a highway near a remote community in southeast Alaska, the state’s Department of Public Safety said Tuesday. The landslide on the Zimovia Highway near Wrangell walloped three homes in its path and created a wide debris field, local officials said. A young girl was found dead during initial search and rescue efforts, and the remains of two adults were located by a drone operator and recovered, according to the department. State troopers are leading search and rescue efforts as three other individuals remain unaccounted for.

North Korea spy satellite!

(CNN or theSkimm Wed. 11/22/23) North Korea claimed earlier today it had put its first spy satellite into orbit. Analysts said if the spacecraft works, it could significantly improve North Korea’s military capabilities, including enabling it to more accurately target opponents’ forces. Neither South Korea, the US nor Japan — all of which are experiencing increasing military tensions with North Korea — could confirm the satellite had made it into orbit. But officials say the rocket carrying the satellite was launched in a southerly direction and is believed to have passed over Japan’s Okinawa prefecture. South Korea called the launch a “clear violation” of a UN Security Council resolution that prohibits North Korea from using ballistic missile technology and vowed to investigate further.

The Rolling Stones are going on a tour sponsored by far-left AARP

Artificial Intelligence, artificial drama

(CNN not theSkimm Wed. 11/22/23) Sam Altman has agreed to return to OpenAI, the company said Wednesday in a post on X, just days after he was ousted as CEO of the leading artificial intelligence company.

NOT READ: The announcement appears to bring an end to several days of chaos for the AI industry that included negotiations over who should lead OpenAI — the company behind ChatGPT — and how the firm should be run, as well as broader discussions about just how fast the arms race to develop AI technology should be moving. It also comes after hundreds of OpenAI employees — nearly the company’s entire staff — threatened to leave, potentially for Microsoft, if the company’s board didn’t resign and reinstate Altman as CEO.
