Shoutout to the Muslims of Peace

(CNN & theSkimm Mon. 11/6/23) An Arab Muslim student at Stanford University is advocating for “love, understanding and inclusivity” after he was recently struck by a car (hit-and-run) in what authorities are calling a so-called “hAtE cRiMe.” (Right on, Mr. Muslim!... driver allegedly yelled "F--- you and your people.") The student wrote from his hospital bed, the world seems to be “succumbing to hatred and prejudice” but the attack strengthened his “resolve to advocate for love, understanding, and inclusivity.” Hm, well… Two out of three’s not great. I disavow inclusivity.

It is one of the latest instances of hate-based violence (as opposed to DV, which is LOVE-based violence, or WAR, which is ALSO non-hateful), as many communities in the US face increasingly tense rhetoric (OH DEAR! RHETORIC!) and ugly hateful protests surrounding the Israel-Hamas war (WHICH HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THEM!).

Blinken scrambling

(CNN or theSkimm Mon. 11/6/23) Blinken is wrapping up his third visit to the Middle East since the start of the latest Israel-Hamas war. SOUNDS INEFFICIENT, IT HASN’T BEEN A MONTH, and he’s making that many trips to-and-fro? Why doesn’t he just stay there?? SMH… making the rounds. Israel’s prime minister Bibi Netanyahu, officials from Qatar, UAE, Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan. Pushing a “humanitarian pause” for aid to Gaza … mixed reception: Israel says no, that lets Hamas stay in power. Arabs say doesn’t go far enough: End bombing to protect civilians.

ALSO … unannounced visit to Iraq: Blinken met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani on recent attacks on US soldiers … about 2,500 American troops in Iraq. (at least a dozen times — DoD claims Iranians behind it, if you believe the DoD… Iran supposedly has a network of proxy forces.)

The West Bank (separate from Gaza): Blinken met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas re: Gaza post-war, he wants “comprehensive political solution.” Abbas canceled his meeting with Biden last month (after that Hospital hoax?). At least 150 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since October 7th (HOW? BY WHO?). This year’s been the deadliest on record for Palestinians in the West Bank

Turkey: Blinken’s stop today. His visit comes after Turkey recalled its ambassador to Israel, joining Bahrain and Jordan, citing the “humanitarian tragedy” in Gaza. Meeting with guys including President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan over the Gaza mess.

CIA Director William Burns is visiting Israel, etc., too — re: Hostages…

Mess in Gaza

(CNN or theSkimm Mon. 11/6/23) Humanitarian agencies lost contact with aid workers in Gaza as the Palestinian enclave slowly recovers from its third communications blackout during this Israel-Hamas war. The disruption to internet and cell service as Israel expands ground operation targeting Hamas infrastructure. Israel said they opened a four-hour evacuation window to secure safe corridors for civilians before forces reached the enclave’s coast Sunday. But outcry’s growing over the Gaza crisis as deadly blasts continue to strike refugee camps and crowded hospitals

Watch what you eat!

(CNN & theSkimm Mon. 11/6/23) Tyson Foods is recalling some of their dino-shaped nuggets — they found small metal pieces in them. Beak careful.

30,000 pounds of chicken nuggets Tyson Foods is recalling after some consumers reported finding small metal pieces in their dinosaur-shaped patties.

HAKE NEWS, Hr 2 | Mon. 11-6-23

  • Poll shows Trump leading Biden in swing states  //  Election workers quitting! Can’t take the heat!  //  Extreme weather!  //  Pollution (in India?)  //  Ukraine war propaganda, remember that?  //  Bump stocks going to Supreme Court  //

Fun poll

(Not CNN but theSkimm Mon. 11/6/23) Trump! a new poll shows he's leading President Biden in five swing states. Among voters' concerns: that Biden's “too old” and can't handle the economy.

Election workers heh

(CNN or theSkimm Mon. 11/6/23) A growing exodus of local election officials is raising alarms ahead of the 2024 presidential contest. Officials say many workers are resigning or retiring because they continue to face a barrage of threats, harassment and partisan interference in their duties, first ignited by Donald Trump’s false claims of a stolen election in 2020. In one region alone — across 11 Western states — more than 160 top election officials have left their positions since November 2020, according to a study from Issue One, a non-profit watchdog group tracking the departures. In some counties, the typical level of experience of officials has also dropped from about eight years to one, the analysis found.

Extreme weather!

(CNN or theSkimm Mon. 11/6/23) More than 60 record-high temperatures are expected from Arizona to New York this week beginning today through Wednesday. The above-average temperatures will make their way through parts of the southwestern US today and gradually move east by the middle of the week, meteorologists say. However, cold air is expected to return quickly in some cities by Friday. For example, St. Louis is expected to drop from a high of 83 degrees on Wednesday down to 61 degrees. Denver and some other areas in the West are also expected to see a similar drop from 75 degrees on Tuesday to the high 40s within a day.

Pollution

(CNN or theSkimm Mon. 11/6/23) New Delhi, home to more than 20 million people, is blanketed with smog — forcing schools to shut down and disrupting the Cricket World Cup. The airborne particle pollution in India’s capital stands at PM 2.5 — a concentration nearly 80 times the World Health Organization’s recommended limit, according to Swiss air quality company IQAir. The city’s air quality declined last week after colder temperatures trapped particles from surrounding crop burning, creating a toxic haze that hit hazardous levels for the fourth straight day today. Exposure to this type of pollution can impair cognitive and immune functions with links to lung and heart disorders.

Remember the Ukraine war?

(CNN or theSkimm Mon. 11/6/23) QUOTE: “People are tired. Everyone is tired … But this is not a stalemate.” — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, responding to concerns that people are getting “tired” after 18 months of war in the country. Zelensky’s comments follow an assessment by his own military chief that the war with Russia is at a “stalemate,” deepening a feud in Kyiv which has heightened nerves that the Israel-Hamas conflict is drawing Western support away from the war in Ukraine.

Bump Stocks went to Supreme Court, ridiculous

(CNN or theSkimm Mon. 11/6/23) Bump stocks. Over the weekend, the Supreme Court agreed to take up a case challenging the Trump-era ban on the accessory for semi-automatic rifles. Bump stocks fire up to hundreds of rounds a minute when paired with an assault-style rifle — a weapon that’s banned in at least 10 states and has been used in several mass shootings. In 2017, then-President Trump announced a ban on bump stocks after the deadly Las Vegas shooting. Now, at question is whether bump stocks can be classified as machine guns and banned under federal law. Federal courts have been split on the legality of the ban. NOT READ: SCOTUS is expected to weigh in by June.
