HAPPY PRESIDENTS’ DAY
(CNN Sun.) February 20 is a federal holiday that, depending on where you live, is known as Presidents Day, President’s Day or Presidents’ Day (note the placement of the apostrophes). Which one is correct? Well, according to the federal government, none of them. It’s Washington’s Birthday.
(CNN Mon.) Presidents Day, a federal holiday, commemorates George Washington's birthday and “honors” the nation's commanders in chief. Many “Americans” are off work today -- and most banks and postal services will not be operating. Probably DMV, libraries, courthouses and city hall — “nonessential” public leeches.
RUSSIA!! ONE YEAR THIS THURSDAY
(CNN Sun.) February 24 also marks one year since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine -- attacking the nation by land, air and sea.
ANTI-RUSSIA PROPAGANDA
(CNN Sun.) The US government has determined that Russia has committed crimes against humanity during its war in Ukraine, Vice President Kamala Harris announced Saturday in Germany.
(CNN Mon.) President Joe Biden made a surprise trip to Kyiv today -- his first trip to Ukraine since Russia's invasion began nearly one year ago. Biden, in joint remarks alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, announced a half-billion dollars of additional assistance. "One year later, Kyiv stands. And Ukraine stands. Democracy stands," Biden said. The visit comes just days before the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of the country and after multiple invitations from Zelensky, who said he believed it was important for Biden to see the situation up close. The visit also follows in the footsteps of other world leaders in Europe who've met with Zelensky.
LETHAL AID FOR ME BUT NOT FOR THEE! -GLOBOHOMOS
(CNN Sun.) The US has recently begun seeing “disturbing” trendlines in China’s support for Russia’s military and there are signs that Beijing wants to “creep up to the line” of providing lethal military aid to Russia without getting caught, US officials familiar with the intelligence told CNN.
OHIO TRAIN DISASTER: THE TRUMP EFFECT?
(CNN Sun.) The Biden administration said it has deployed federal medical experts to help assess what dangers remain at an Ohio village where a train carrying hazardous materials derailed this month as anxious residents point to signs of adverse effects. (Do we really want FEMA involved though?)
(CNN Mon.) Residents in East Palestine, Ohio, are expressing their anxiety and health concerns after a train carrying hazardous materials derailed there earlier this month. While officials have repeatedly sought to assure residents that the water and air in the community are safe, residents have been reporting rashes, nausea and headaches. This comes after vinyl chloride was released from the train following the derailment -- a chemical that has the potential to kill at high levels and increase cancer risk. The state now plans to open a health clinic in East Palestine on Tuesday for residents concerned about possible symptoms. The Biden administration announced it deployed experts to help assess what dangers remain in the area after Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine requested medical teams from the CDC and the US Department of Health.
Trump said it only happened after he announced he was going… (Do we really want FEMA involved though? The fox guarding the henhouse!)

FAT TUESDAY / MARDI GRAS — SHOOTING
(CNN Sun.) This Tuesday, Feb 21, is not just any Tuesday -- particularly if you're in New Orleans. Mardi Gras, aka Fat Tuesday, is the culmination of Carnival season and the last big blowout before Lent begins. DISGUSTING.
(CNN Mon.) A shooting along a Mardi Gras parade route in New Orleans on Sunday night left one person dead and injured four others, including a juvenile girl. The gunfire erupted along the route of the popular Krewe of Bacchus parade, traditionally held in the run-up to the city's raucous Mardi Gras celebration on Tuesday. Police said a suspect has been arrested, although it remains unclear what led up to the shooting. "We really wanted this to be a safe Mardi Gras and we'll continue to work towards that end," said Hans Ganthier, chief deputy superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department. An investigation is underway to determine the shooter's motive and whether other individuals were involved, police said.
TUESDAY: SECTION 230 AT SCOTUS?
(CNN Sun.) The so-called Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the first of two cases regarding a little-known law (Section 230) that shields platforms / publishers like Google, Twitter and YouTube from lawsuits over third-party content posted on their sites. The final outcome of the case could have far-reaching repercussions for online speech and content moderation.
(CNN) Section 230, the law that’s been called “the 26 words that created the internet,” passed in 1996: (Wikipedia) The 26 words are, QUOTE: “No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.”
One of the law’s architects, Oregon Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden, has said that without Section 230, “all online media would face an onslaught of bad-faith lawsuits and pressure campaigns from the powerful” seeking to silence them. He’s also said Section 230 directly empowers websites to remove content they believe is objectionable by creating a “good Samaritan” safe harbor: Under Section 230, websites enjoy immunity for moderating content in the ways they see fit — not according to others’ preferences.
JIMMY CARTER IS REPORTEDLY DYING
(CNN Sun.) Former President Jimmy Carter will begin receiving hospice care, according to a statement from The Carter Center on Saturday. Carter, who turned 98 last year, became the oldest living US president in history after the passing of George H.W. Bush, who died in 2018 at 94.
CO SPRINGS MASS MURDER SUSPECT
(CNN Sun.) Wednesday: The gunmale accused of killing five people in a mass shooting at an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, last November is due in court for a preliminary hearing. The suspect is facing a total of 317 counts, including charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, assault and bias-motivated crimes causing bodily injury.
