EcOnOmY’s GrEaT!
(CNN or theSkimm Fri 1-19-24) Macy’s is laying off around 2,000 employees and closing more stores as Americans move away from brick-and-mortar chains. Consumers are also spending less at gas stations, furniture stores and personal-care shops, the Commerce Department says.
Ballot fight
(CNN or theSkimm Fri 1-19-24) Former President Donald Trump has warned the Supreme Court of “chaos and bedlam” if states are allowed to bar him from the 2024 ballot. A growing number of states are pushing forward with efforts to exclude the likely Republican presidential nominee from their ballots, resulting in appeals from Trump’s team. The Colorado Supreme Court last month said Trump is constitutionally ineligible to run in 2024 because the 14th Amendment’s ban on insurrectionists holding office covers his conduct on January 6, 2021. The Supreme Court agreed earlier this month to hear the case, accepting an appeal brought by Trump. Meanwhile, the Oregon Supreme Court dismissed a similar case last week and election officials in Washington state confirmed Thursday that Trump’s name will remain on the GOP primary ballot after a state judge dismissed a lawsuit that tried to disqualify him.
Govt shutdown please
(CNN or theSkimm Fri 1-19-24) Congress passed a short-term funding extension Thursday, averting a partial government shutdown after lawmakers raced the clock ahead of a key deadline today. The bill will now be sent to President Joe Biden to be signed into law. However, major challenges still lay ahead as lawmakers must now attempt to pass a series of full-year spending bills before new March deadlines. Senate negotiators have also been working to strike a deal on border security that could unlock passage of aid to Israel and Ukraine. But due to the current gridlock in Washington, Pentagon officials have not held a single meeting since last month to decide what to send Ukraine from the Defense Department’s weapons stockpiles — because there is no money left to fund the aid packages.
Uvalde grandstanding
(CNN or theSkimm Fri 1-19-24) The Justice Department released a damning report Thursday that said the 2022 school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, could have been stopped sooner if it weren’t for critical failures in leadership among specific law enforcement officers. It took 77 minutes from when the 18-year-old shooter walked into Robb Elementary School until he was stopped. The massacre left 19 children and two teachers dead. The DOJ report paints a picture of confusion and cowardice among the officers who ran toward the sound of gunfire, then almost immediately stopped once they approached the classrooms where the gunman was located. The report said that the officers’ decisions ran counter to widely established active shooter response protocol, which instructs law enforcement to move toward and eliminate any threat.
Salmonella
(CNN or theSkimm Fri 1-19-24) 22 states have reported cases of salmonella infections this month linked to recalled charcuterie meats. While the investigation is ongoing, the CDC said people should throw away the contaminated products that were recently sold at Sam’s Club and Costco stores.

Pakistan-Iran mess
(CNN or theSkimm Fri 1-19-24) Tensions between Pakistan and Iran are on the rise.
Both countries have long fought along their shared border, each accusing the other of housing separatist and militant groups. Now, those tensions have reached unprecedented levels amid tit-for-tat attacks.
Earlier this week, Iran carried out strikes in Pakistan’s Baluchistan province, killing two children, according to Pakistani authorities. Iran said it targeted Jaish al-Adl, a Sunni separatist militant group that killed 11 officers last month in Iran. Days later, Pakistan launched its own strikes, targeting the Baluchistan Liberation Front (BLF) — a separatist group — in Iran. At least seven people died.
Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, Iran has been using its proxy groups (re: Houthis and Hezbollah) in other countries. Some experts say Iran could be using the instability in the Middle East as an opportunity to target its enemies. Others say Iran is trying to show the strength of its military power, especially after an ISIS attack killed nearly 100 Iranians earlier this month.
It’s not clear if these back-to-back strikes could pull Pakistan into the Middle East’s conflicts. Pakistan said it was targeting a terrorist threat, not Iran. Tehran condemned Pakistan's attacks, but also reportedly said it doesn’t want to “allow enemies to strain the amicable and brotherly relations of Tehran and Islamabad.” Meanwhile, the US said “there’s no need for escalation.”
theSkimm: Pakistan's strikes marked the first time Iran has experienced a land attack since the end of the Iran-Iraq war more than 30 years ago. It has many on edge amid concerns that tensions could spill over into the Middle East.
Israel-Palestine war drama: The Peanut Gallery
(CNN or theSkimm Fri 1-19-24) Yesterday, Mexico and Chile referred the Israel-Hamas war to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for evaluation of possible war crimes by Israel and Hamas “due to growing worry over the latest escalation of violence.” Gaza's been under a week-long communications blackout and faces a looming threat of famine. One visiting UN official described the territory as “the most dangerous place in the world to be a child.” An estimated 50,000 pregnant women are struggling due to lack of access to proper medical care, with reports of some babies dying in childbirth. The death toll for Palestinians in Gaza has grown to over 24,000 people, at least half of them women and children. 85% of Gaza’s population — up to 1.9 million people — has been displaced.
Meanwhile, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu rejected calls for a two-state solution yesterday, amid pressure from the US to move toward a path for a Palestinian state. The PM's comments point to mounting tensions with the Biden administration.
The news comes as Israelis marked the one-year birthday of Kfir Bibas, a baby Israel says Hamas took hostage on October 7 — when more than 1,200 people were killed, according to Israeli figures, and more than 250 others were captured. It also comes amid mounting reports of rape and sexual assault by Hamas. Hamas has denied the allegations of sexual violence.
