*BiPaRTiSaN bOrDeR dEaL

(CNN & theSkimm Mon 2-5-24) Senators unveiled a long-awaited border deal (and foreign aid package, Ukraine, Israel) on Sunday… a bipartisan approach to tackle the “migrant crisis” at the US-Mexico border, which saw more than 2.4 million apprehensions in the last fiscal year. If passed, the $118 billion package would require President Biden to shut down the border “as necessary” (WEASEL WORDS! SUBJECT TO “GOVERNING” IN DENIAL!) and would tighten asylum requirements.

The deal would also include (aid to “key” US allies abroad) money (BILLIONS OF DOLLARS) for Israel (SeCuRiTy AsSiStAnCe), Ukraine, and Taiwan, as well as humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza (THAT MAKES NO SENSE). President Biden urged Congress to get the bill to his desk. Still, the measure faces an uphill battle, with an initial vote expected this week.*

*But House Speaker Mike Johnson declared the deal “dead on arrival” (DOA!) after the text was released on Sunday. Johnson attacked the deal as too weak, saying the House will instead vote this week on a standalone bill providing aid for Israel.

*The Fed warns about US spending: SAVE YOUR MONEY!

Yesterday, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell gave a “60 Minutes” interview in which he said the US is on “an unsustainable fiscal path.” Powell, who clearly has no respect for the concept of the Sunday Scaries, also indicated that Americans shouldn’t expect lower interest rates next month — but instead possibly sometime later this year. Powell made it clear that he wants inflation down to predictable levels so Americans can get groceries in peace before he loosens controls.

Americans have a range of issues they’re prioritizing for 2024, with polls showing the economy and immigration topping the list for many. Now, on the heels of one of the most unproductive years in Congress’s history, many are looking to see if lawmakers can deliver on something that's top of mind.

Floods!

(CNN & theSkimm Mon 2-5-24) Much of California is experiencing an atmospheric river-fueled storm (lashes the state). Flash flood warnings are in place for millions in California — heavy rain and strong winds.More than a month’s worth of rainfall could hit the state in the span of days. Up to 37 million people in the state are under flood alerts and at least 800,000 people (900,000!) have lost power.… and hundreds of flights at California airports have been canceled or delayed.

The storm will bring rainfall totals of up to 8 inches in Southern California with isolated totals of up to 14 inches across the mountains and foothills, forecasts show. Los Angeles will also receive close to half a year’s worth of rain by Tuesday, with officials warning it will be one of the “most dramatic weather days in recent memory.” A state of emergency is in place for at least eight California counties as authorities urge residents to heed evacuation warnings.

(CNN or theSkimm Mon 2-5-24) QUOTE: “The stakes in this election could not be higher.” — President Biden, after winning South Carolina’s Democratic primary on Saturday. While the result was expected, Biden secured his first delegates in his quest to win his party’s nomination again.

NOT READ: Notably, this year marked the first time South Carolina has appeared at the front of the official Democratic nominating calendar — a change made largely due to Biden’s urging.

(CNN & theSkimm Mon 2-5-24) The Grammys. Yesterday, women took over the 66th Grammy Awards, dominating nearly every category (history-making moments, says CNN — they throw that word around so much it’s meaningless, it means something evil and stupid, usually). Miley Cyrus got her first two Grammys. SZA likely didn't want to hit snooze on the night, after winning best progressive R&B album. Billie Eilish learned she was made for song of the year. Victoria Monét won for best new artist.

Taylor Swift took home album of the year again (2022 album “Midnights”... 2 years ago??) — setting a new record (4th time, most albums of the year ever… new album coming out in April). Speaking of album of the year, SJW rapper Jay-Z had a word (calling out) the Recording Academy (over their voting process). Some of the other artists who had the crowd on their feet: Céline Dion, Joni Mitchell (perfomored at age 80, first time at the Grammys), and Tracy Chapman’s duet of “Fast Car” (1988) with Luke Combs who covered it recently. Nostalgia…

Billy Joel sang the song “Turn the Lights Back On” — his first new pop single in 17 years.

BTW: Usher’s gonna do a 2024 Super Bowl performance (Feb 11).

*Chile wildfires!

(CNN & theSkimm Mon 2-5-24) At least 160 active wildfires are burning across Chile as emergency crews race to rescue residents in smoldering communities. Aerial footage across the country shows dozens of vehicles burned to shells alongside multiple houses reduced to ash. Chilean President Gabriel Boric has declared two days of national mourning for the more than 100 people who have died in the fires so far.

Speaking at a news conference held after visiting affected areas on Sunday, Boric cautioned that the death toll would “increase significantly.” He emphasized Chile’s defense ministry would deploy more military units to affected areas and make all necessary resources available.

In order to aid firefighters in containing the spread of the fires, Chilean authorities put in a curfew for 9 PM in some areas.

(CNN or theSkimm Mon 2-5-24) Twenty years ago, Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook on February 4, 2004, in his Harvard dorm room. There’s a clip rewind to 2005 when CNN spoke to Zuckerberg about the budding platform known as “The Facebook.”

Cancer treatment trials

(CNN or theSkimm Mon 2-5-24) There’s A new cancer treatment researchers are trying. Cancer patients in London became the first in the UK to receive an experimental treatment known as mRNA therapy. NOT READ: It’s part of a trial to assess the therapy’s safety and effectiveness in treating melanoma, lung cancer, and other solid tumors. The treatment works by using mRNA to show the patient’s immune system common tumor markers and train it to target cancer cells. Still, testing is in the early stages, and it could take years before the therapy reaches the market.
