  • Invasion in TX: Courts jerk Texas around!  //  Haiti mess, coming to America?  //  Aborsh on the rise  //

*Invasion in TX

(CNN or theSkimm Wed 3-20-24) Invasion in Texas. Yesterday, a federal appeals court put a controversial immigration law on hold hours after the Supreme Court sided with Texas. The high court's ruling initially allowed Texas to temporarily enforce SB4, which allows state authorities to arrest migrants and deport those suspected of crossing the border illegally. The 6-3 SCOTUS decision rejected the Biden admin's emergency application, which argued states can’t impede on federal authority of the border. Immigration advocates said the law would encourage racial profiling and discrimination. Meanwhile, Mexico said it would not accept any deportations “under any circumstances.” Now, an appeals court has blocked the law again and is expected to hear arguments in the case today.

*Haiti

(CNN or theSkimm Wed 3-20-24) Hundreds of Americans are stuck in Haiti amid a sprawling crisis that has brought rampant gang violence to the streets of Port-au-Prince. State Department Deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel told CNN on Tuesday that nearly 1,000 Americans in Haiti have reached out to the US government. Haitian airline Sunrise Airways separately announced it will operate special flights between Cap-Haitien, a city on Haiti’s north coast, and Miami on March 25. The airline previously told CNN it had suspended “all flights” on March 1 due to safety reasons. The crisis in Haiti intensified earlier this month as criminal gangs and militias began wreaking coordinated havoc on businesses and leaving necessities including food, medicine and gas in short supply.

**Aborsh on the rise

(CNN or theSkimm Wed 3-20-24) On the rise: Abortions. There were more than 1 million abortions provided in the US last year, according to a report published yesterday. That’s the most in over a decade, with medication abortions accounting for 63% of all abortions. Still, the findings are considered to be an undercount. The report comes almost two years after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade — allowing more than a dozen states to ban or restrict abortion access. Health officials say the report highlights the work clinics and abortion funds have done to help people in the wake of state bans. Last year, over 160,000 women crossed state lines to seek care in places like Illinois and New Mexico, where medication abortion is still legal. At least for now. The Supreme Court is hearing arguments on that too.

**world’s happiest countries in 2024

(CNN or theSkimm Wed 3-20-24) Finland has held onto its top ranking for seven years straight.

The survey asks each participant to score their life as a whole, considering what they value… per John Helliwell, emeritus professor of economics at the Vancouver School of Economics, University of British Columbia, and a founding editor of the World Happiness Report.

“And you find out Finland’s pretty rich in all of those things, like wallets being returned if they’re dropped in the street, people helping each other day in and day out, very high quality and universally distributed health and education opportunities — so everyone more or less comes out of the starting gate the same,” he said.

He also noted that Finland has happy immigrants, “so it’s something that they’re prepared to share with newcomers.”

The report looks at six key variables to help explain life evaluations: GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity and perceptions of corruption.

Finland’s Nordic neighbors also earned reliably high scores with Denmark (No. 2), Iceland (No. 3) and Sweden (No. 4) in the top five, and Norway (No. 7) comfortably ranking in the top 10.

Given the war with Hamas, Israel may come as a surprise at No. 5, although the country has been in the top 10 since 2022.  (rankings based on a 3-year average) — The report, which relies heavily on the Gallup World Poll, also includes a ranking for Palestine at No. 103, although its statehood is not widely recognized.

The United States (No. 23) and Germany (No. 24) dropped out of the top 20 in part because of a rise in happiness among other countries — especially Czechia (No. 18), Lithuania (No. 19) and Slovenia (No. 21). The United Kingdom was No. 20.

While Lithuania ranked 19th this year on the overall list, among respondents under 30, it was the No. 1 happiest country in 2024. For those over 60, Lithuania came in at No. 44.

In the United States and Canada, happiness scores from people under 30 were dramatically lower than those from people age 60 and older. Among people under 30, the US ranked at No. 62, while for those 60 and older, it was No. 10. Canada was No. 58 among the young and No. 8 for those 60 and older.

Australia and New Zealand, to a lesser extent, also saw much lower rankings among the young.

**White cops under attack!

(CNN or theSkimm Wed 3-20-24) QUOTE: “The Justice Department will hold accountable officers who violate constitutional rights, and in so doing, betray the public trust.” — Attorney General Merrick Garland, after two White former Mississippi law enforcement officers — who were members of a self-proclaimed “Goon Squad” — were sentenced by a federal judge Tuesday to prison after admitting to torturing and abusing two Black men last year. Four other White ex-officers who pleaded guilty to the abuse will be sentenced later this week.

NOT READ: **Health and diet

(CNN not theSkimm Wed 3-20-24) Strawberries topped this year’s “Dirty Dozen” list — a ranking of the fruits and vegetables contaminated with the most amount of pesticides. However, studies have found that levels of pesticides in adults and children can drop up to 95% after a switch to an organic diet.

(Not CNN but theSkimm Wed 3-20-24) Intermittent fasting. New research from the American Heart Association says people who restrict their eating to an eight-hour window could be 91% more likely to die from a cardiovascular disease (sounds suspicious!). Intermittent fasting has grown in popularity over the years, thanks in part to celebs. Still, the researchers said more work needs to be done to understand why restricted eating can lead to cardiovascular disease.

**Explosive star event will create a once-in-a-lifetime sight in the sky

(CNN or theSkimm Wed 3-20-24) Astronomers are keeping a watchful eye for an explosive event, known as a nova (different from a supernova?), between now and September. CNN says they expect a “new star” expected to appear, per NASA.

While a supernova is the explosive death of a massive star, a nova refers to the sudden, brief explosion from a collapsed star known as a white dwarf.

*1,800-year-old Roman statue discovered in a parking lot

(CNN or theSkimm Wed 3-20-24) Construction workers in the UK have uncovered a marble head that appears to be dated to the 1st century or 2nd century!

Primaries blah blah blah

(CNN or theSkimm Wed 3-20-24) Crooked President Joe Biden and Our Greatest President Donald Trump, both of whom had already clinched their parties’ presidential nominations, picked up more delegates Tuesday in their respective primary contests in Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Kansas and Ohio as they gear up for a rematch in November.

In Ohio, businessman Bernie Moreno won the key Republican Senate primary, setting up a high-stakes contest against Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown in the fall that will be pivotal to deciding control of the Senate. Trump had endorsed Moreno, and the primary was this year’s first test of the former president’s clout in a contested Senate race.
