  • Tax Day Monday  //  OJ dead at 76  //  Biden against “gun show loophole”  //  Kamala attending Aborsh rally in AZ after law  //

*Open up your wallet and let the money-grubbers get that bag!*

*Or be the money-grubber, get some of your money back…

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 4-12-24) Just a few days left to file your 2023 tax returns before Monday’s deadline. Should you need a bit more time, you can file for an automatic six-month extension to avoid a potential penalty from the IRS.

*O.J. Simpson

(CNN & theSkimm Fri 4-12-24) OJ Simpson has died of cancer at age 76, “surrounded by his children and grandchildren,” his family announced Thursday. While Simpson was a highly decorated athlete known as “The Juice” by his fans — Simpson played in the NFL for 11 seasons — but he became perhaps one of the most controversial figures of the late 20th century after he was charged with the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her “friend” Ronald Goldman.

Simpson’s infamous white Bronco chase in 1994 sparked one of the most-watched events in TV history, with about 95 million people tuning in. A year later, a jury found him “not guilty” — acquitted in a trial that captivated the country (Millions tuned in to watch the televised 1995 trial, dubbed the “trial of the century”). In 1997, a civil trial jury unanimously deemed Simpson liable for the deaths and ordered him to pay $33.5 million in damages. He maintained his innocence for the last three decades, but by 2016, polling showed most Americans believed Simpson was guilty.

(Seattle Times, 2021) Of the 12 jurors, eight were Black, including six women and two men. “The perfect juror was a female African American with a high school education or less,” per a female consultant (in 2016) (she later helped select Kyle Rittenhouse’s jury for the defense — Kyle was obviously innocent; never should’ve gone to trial).

*Biden attacks 2A (infringing on the basic right!)

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 4-12-24) What's being closed… The so-called gun show loophole. Yesterday, the Biden administration authorized the biggest expansion of background checks for gun purchases in decades. The new rule, which is sure to face legal challenges, requires people who sell firearms online or at gun shows to register as federally licensed firearms dealers. That means the sellers would be required to run criminal and “mental health” background checks on prospective buyers. The rule goes into effect in 30 days.

…Oh and speaking of new gun measures, Tennessee is looking to allow K-12 public teachers to conceal and carry guns at school. It comes as a new survey showed that most K-12 teachers are at least somewhat worried of a shooting happening at their school.

**Kamala Harris to attend abortion rights rally in Arizona

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 4-12-24) Vice President Kamala Harris will head to Arizona today as a near-total abortion ban is now in place in the state. Her visit comes after lawmakers failed to pass a measure blocking a state Supreme Court ruling that reinstated an abortion law from the Civil War era.

HAKE NEWS, Hr 2 | Fri 4-12-24

  • Iowa law against illegals  //  Measles  //  IG against sexploitation of underage mostly boys  //

*Invasion in IOWA!

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 4-12-24) Iowa’s Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a bill into law this week that would make it a crime for some undocumented migrants to be in the state. The law, which takes effect on July 1, will allow state officers to arrest some undocumented migrants and provide them the option to either accept deportation or face potential prosecution. It is similar to Texas’ controversial law that allows state officials to arrest and detain suspected illegal immigrants and order them to be deported. The Texas law is currently blocked as a federal appeals court considers its constitutionality. In response to Iowa’s bill, the Mexican government said it will not stand idly by and plans to explore legal advice and resources to help defend the rights of Mexicans in Iowa.

*Who’s bringing the measles?!

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 4-12-24) More than 100 cases of measles have been reported in the US since the start of the year and the CDC warns that a rapid rise in cases poses a renewed threat to the country’s disease elimination status. Measles was considered eliminated in the US in 2000, meaning no outbreaks have persisted for a year or more. However, data shows there were 338 measles cases reported in the US from January 2020 through March 2024. The vast majority of new cases (96%) were associated with importation from international travel, and most of those cases (61%) occurred among US residents who were not vaccinated despite being eligible — or whose vaccination status was unknown. Imported cases are expected, but health experts say vaccination coverage is key to ensuring outbreaks don’t persist in the US.

*IG pretending to protect out-of-control children

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 4-12-24) Instagram is testing new tools to protect minors from sextortion

It involves coercing a person to send nude photos online and then threatening to share them unless the victim pays money or engages in sexual favors. In an effort to fight sexual scams on its platform, Instagram announced yesterday that it will be rolling out a new feature in the coming weeks that blurs nude images in minors’ DMs. The update will also discourage users from hitting send on nudes and gives the option to unsend them. The app updates will automatically turn on for those under 18. Instagram’s announcement comes as sextortion has been on the rise.

The FBI has been sounding the alarm for a while now. Earlier this year, the agency said reports of sextortion involving money jumped by at least 20% from October 2022 to March 2023, with boys between the ages of 14 and 17 being the primary targets.

NOT READ: At the same time, Instagram parent company Meta and other social media platforms have faced growing scrutiny from health officials and lawmakers for not doing enough to protect young people. While some are applauding Meta’s latest efforts, others say the social media giant is merely lifting a finger and can do more to protect its millions of underage users.

Instagram’s effort to protect youth from sexual scams is long overdue. As the company tries to correct course, it’s unclear whether it’ll be enough or if other social media companies follow suit.
