*Crazy weather!
(CNN or theSkimm Wed 4-24-24) Parts of Greece, including its capital Athens, are being blanketed by an orange-colored haze as dust from the Sahara Desert drifts north (reminds me of the Dust Bowl).
Some European broadcasters are also reporting “freak” weather in Finland, where cities are being inundated by unusual amounts of snow.
**Foreign Aid
(CNN or theSkimm Wed 4-24-24) President Joe Biden is poised to sign legislation today granting billions in aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. His expected signature comes after the Senate passed the $95 billion foreign aid package Tuesday following months of delays. The bipartisan legislation includes sanctions on Iran, the seizure of frozen Russian sovereign assets and a measure that could lead to a nationwide ban of TikTok. Its passage is a significant victory for Biden, congressional Democrats and Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell, who has long pushed to send aid to Ukraine even as the right wing of his party increasingly soured on support for Kyiv.
theSkimm: The Senate gave its stamp of approval to a package of bills last night.
Days after the House’s passage, the upper chamber greenlit the $95 billion foreign aid package and potential ban on TikTok. The bills now go to President Biden, who plans to sign them into law today. Here’s what you need to know about… (NOTHING!)
Foreign aid…After months of delay, Congress fulfilled the Biden administration’s request to pass funding to help US allies. The measure includes tens of billions of dollars for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. More than $9 billion will go toward humanitarian aid in Gaza and other war-torn areas — a provision Democrats pushed for. Congress’s approval of the package came despite opposition from Republicans over Ukraine aid and amid Democrats’ concerns over the worsening crisis in Gaza.
TikTok…Lawmakers have set the stage for a potential ban. If signed into law, the measure will give China-based ByteDance up to a year to sell the app or face a ban in the US. Intelligence officials have warned the app, which is used by more than 170 million Americans, puts users’ data at risk of surveillance. TikTok is expected to sue, setting up a battle in the courts over free speech rights.
theSkimm: Following months of political infighting, Congress has passed long-awaited foreign aid by tying a top social media platform as a concession. But the fight over TikTok is far from over.
**Aborsh
(CNN or theSkimm Wed 4-24-24) The Supreme Court will hear arguments in a high-stakes abortion rights case today where it will consider whether hospitals have an obligation under federal law to provide emergency abortions to women who are in medical emergencies. In recent months, several stories have detailed the accounts of pregnant women in distress who were denied emergency care in states with outright abortion bans or restrictive laws. On Tuesday, President Biden visited his rival’s home turf in Florida, one week before a restrictive abortion ban in that state goes into effect. His campaign is seeking to galvanize voters by seizing on abortion, arguing that former President Donald Trump’s vision for America is a threat to personal freedoms and health care.
*Campus protests
(CNN or theSkimm Wed 4-24-24) Columbia University said it has extended negotiations with student activists over the dismantling of the pro-Palestinian encampment that has thrown its campus into days of turmoil. More than 80 tents at the school were still standing ahead of a deadline to clear the area late Tuesday night as hundreds of people buzzed in and around the encampment. House Speaker Mike Johnson plans to visit Jewish students at Columbia today and hold a news conference “regarding the troubling rise of virulent antisemitism on America’s college campuses,” according to his office. This comes as officials nationwide are grappling with a response to encampments at other universities in what has become a coast-to-coast disruption.

**Poor gymnast girls getting like $100k each!
(CNN or theSkimm Wed 4-24-24) The InJustice Department will pay $139M to more than 100 victims of disgraced former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar after reaching a settlement Tuesday over the FBI’s initial failures in investigating the sexual assault case.
*Armed teachers
(CNN or theSkimm Wed 4-24-24) CNN: State legislators in Tennessee passed a bill Tuesday allowing K-12 teachers and school staff to be armed. Educators who seek to bring a handgun on school grounds will be subject to certain conditions, according to a summary of the bill. They will be required to get an enhanced carry permit, complete a background check and undergo dozens of hours of training, among other requirements. The bill now heads to the desk of Republican Gov. Bill Lee for his signature. The contentious debate on arming teachers comes as “gun violence” (NO SUCH THING) remains the leading cause of death for kids in America. This year alone, 436 children under 18 have been killed in gun violence, according to the so-called Gun Violence Archive.
theSkimm: Where there’s outrage… Tennessee. Yesterday, state House Republicans passed a bill that would allow some teachers and staff to carry concealed handguns in schools. Those who want to carry a gun would need to pass a background check, complete handgun training, and get a gun permit. Under the measure, parents wouldn’t be allowed to know whether their child’s teacher is armed. The bill, which already passed the state Senate, now heads to Republican Gov. Bill Lee’s desk for his signature or veto. If signed into law, it’ll be the state’s most expansive gun rights measure since the deadly Nashville school shooting last year.
**Unhealthy air
(CNN or theSkimm Wed 4-24-24) Nearly 40% of people in the US live with unhealthy air pollution, according to a new report from the American Lung Association. That amounts to 131 million people living with levels of polluted air that can significantly affect their health — up from 119 million in last year’s data. Extreme heat, drought and wildfires are among the factors that have contributed to the increase, especially in the Western part of the country. Several cities in the region, including Los Angeles, Phoenix and Denver also received “F” grades for ozone smog, according to the report. Ozone pollution is formed from emissions from cars, power plants and refineries.
*No bird flu in the milk?
CNN: QUOTE: “We have seen nothing that would change our assessment that the commercial milk supply is safe.” — The FDA, saying Tuesday that it had detected viral particles of H5N1 bird flu viruses in milk purchased at US grocery stores. However, the agency still believes pasteurized milk is safe to drink because it is unlikely that the particles could infect people.
theSkimm: What officials are keeping an eye on… Milk. Yesterday, the FDA said it detected traces of the bird flu virus in samples of pasteurized milk in the US. Before you start dumping your milk, officials said the findings don’t pose a risk and that the commercial milk supply is safe to drink. The FDA’s announcement comes less than a month since bird flu has been detected in dairy herds across eight states. At least one person has been infected with the virus.
*Non-compete clauses
(CNN or theSkimm Wed 4-24-24) What might make it easier to leave your job… A ban on noncompete clauses. Yesterday, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) banned companies from creating new noncompetes and threw out existing agreements for anyone other than senior executives. Industries, from fast food restaurants to Wall Street, use the clauses to keep employees from working for a competitor or starting their own business once they’ve left. The FTC estimates noncompetes affect about one in five American workers. The ban is set to go into effect this summer, but faces a looming legal battle. Businesses say that noncompetes are vital for keeping their trade secrets under wraps.
