IRS

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 5-3-24) The IRS announced it is ramping up audits of wealthy taxpayers by 50%. Thousands of new employees will be hired to help with the endeavor, while improved AI systems will assist in selecting which millionaires and businesses to audit.

Campus “protests”

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 5-3-24) President Joe Biden made his first extensive remarks on the wave of unrest at colleges Thursday, drawing a line between what he called peaceful and violent protests while reiterating his support for Israel and dismissing the calls for the National Guard to intervene. He emphasized that both groups have the right to free speech, but also said the US was a “civil society” where “order must prevail.” When asked if the protests have forced him to reconsider American policies toward the Middle East, Biden said, “No.” Nationwide, more than 2,000 people have been arrested on college and university campuses since April 18. Protests in solidarity with Palestinians under Israeli siege in Gaza have also spread to campuses in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

BEEF RECALL

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 5-3-24) Eight tons of ground beef sold at Walmart locations nationwide have been recalled for possible E. coli contamination. In total, six meat items produced by Cargill Meat Solutions could be affected, according to a recall notice from the USDA. There have not been any confirmed reports of illnesses, but a spokesperson from the meat company said the products were recalled “out of an abundance of caution.” Walmart issued a statement reiterating its commitment to the “health and safety” of its customers. “As soon as we were notified of the recall, we immediately removed impacted products and informed customers who may have purchased these products,” a Walmart spokesperson said.

Dubai rainfall

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 5-3-24) Another round of heavy rain returned to the United Arab Emirates on Thursday, forcing widespread business closures and flight cancellations. The storm comes just two weeks after record-setting rainfall triggered damaging floods in several parts of the country, which killed at least four people in the UAE and brought the bustling region to a halt. The floods also killed at least 19 others in Oman, including 10 children whose school bus was swept away in the deluge.

NOT READ: The rainfall was not as heavy as the event two weeks ago, but Dubai experienced nearly an inch in 12 hours — more than twice what it usually receives over the months of April and May combined. Authorities have ordered remote working and studying in affected areas today.

Certified emotional support alligator is missing

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 5-3-24) The search is on to find Wally, a “gentle” emotional support alligator currently on the loose in Georgia.

‘Ping pong-sized’ hailstones ravage famous French wine region

Still think CLIMATE CHANGE is FAKE?

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 5-3-24) A violent hailstorm wreaked havoc on vineyards in Chablis, ripping plants apart in the latest weather-related blow to hit local Chardonnay winemakers.

Women need to exercise and eat differently than [from] men.

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 5-3-24) You may have heard about the benefits of intermittent fasting and strength training. But are they equally beneficial to men and women? Not necessarily… a recent executive order signed by President Joe Biden to improve women’s health research grabbed headlines.

… women are nearly twice as likely to die from heart attacks as men, and that they report many more symptoms associated with acute coronary syndromes

… women remain broadly underrepresented in medical literature, according to a study published in 2022 in Women’s Health Reports. Misogynistic attitudes remain as well.

One Dr. Stacy Sims of NZ (who did a 2019 TED talk) claims … [women can already do long and slow… they need] high-intensity work: those true high-intensity intervals of 30 seconds or one minute. This helps women raise their metabolic rate, it helps reduce visceral (deep belly) fat and, most importantly, it helps keep [their] gut microbiome diverse and helps improve cardiovascular health.

India election

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 5-3-24) 960M people are eligible to vote in India’s election, the world’s biggest. To prevent fraud or duplicate votes, election workers paint indelible ink, or “voter ink,” across the top of voters’ left index finger — leaving a stain that can take up to two weeks to wash off.

NOT READ: Google on trial…

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 5-3-24) A landmark trial against Google could change the internet as we know it.

Today, closing arguments are expected to wrap up in what an expert is calling the “most important antitrust trial of the 21st century.” The Justice Department alleges that Google has illegally maintained a monopoly over the search engine business, stifling competition from other tech companies like Microsoft and DuckDuckGo. During the trial, DOJ lawyers said Google spent $26.3 billion in 2021 to ensure it was the default search engine for smartphones and web browsers, reportedly giving Apple $18 billion alone. Google’s argument is that its search engine is top dog simply because it’s the best. The judge’s ruling, which is expected in the coming months, could be a sign of what’s to come.

In recent years, the government has sued some of tech’s biggest names — like Amazon, Meta, and Apple — over their business practices. But the case against Google is the first high-profile antitrust trial in more than two decades. The fate of the company is now in the judge’s hands and his decision could affect how people use the internet in the future. That could look like Google no longer being the default search engine on certain products. Experts predict it’s unlikely the judge will break up the company or absolve it completely, but instead will land somewhere in the middle and order the tech giant to overhaul some of its business practices.

For years, Big Tech has seemed untouchable. Now, the government’s case against Google could change how the world’s most popular search engine operates and how users engage with it.

WNBA “star” (the black lesbian)

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 5-3-24) Who’s sharing her story… Brittney Griner. The WNBA star, who was imprisoned in Russia for nearly 10 months, opened up about her experience for the first time in an ABC News special earlier this week. In 2022, Griner flew to Russia to play during the WNBA offseason when she was detained for carrying cannabis oil. She was sentenced to nine years in prison and transferred to a penal colony. Griner said the filthy living conditions in prison made her feel “less than a human.” She said she contemplated suicide several times, but that the thought of her loved ones pushed her to endure her time behind bars. The WNBA star’s memoir, which shares more about her time in prison, comes out next week.
