Grammy-award winning pop star and social activist Lizzo invited drag performers on stage in Tennessee after the state became the first in the nation to ban such performances on public property and near schools.
"In light of recent and tragic events and current events, I was told by people on the internet, ‘Cancel your shows in Tennessee,’ ‘Don’t go to Tennessee,'" Lizzo said during her performance. "Their reason was valid, but why would I not come to the people who need to hear this message the most?"
"The people who need to feel this release the most?" Lizzo said to cheers in the crowd.
"Why would I not create a safe space in Tennessee where we can celebrate drag entertainers and celebrate our differences and celebrate fat, Black, women?" the singer added.
Tennessee became the first state to ban drag shows on public property and near schools. The law, which takes effect on July 1, criminalizes performances that take place in public or where they could be seen by children.
The bill prohibits "adult cabaret performances" from taking place within 1,000 feet of schools, public parks or places of worship, according to The Hill.
The legislation builds on existing restrictions on "adult-oriented businesses" in Tennessee, expanding obscenity laws there to include performances that feature topless or exotic dancers or "male or female impersonators" that provide entertainment appealing "to a prurient interest."
One popular drag performer who goes by the stage name "Aquaria" responded directly to Lizzo's Instagram post on her performance.
"Thank you so much for the platform for me and the drag race girls and especially for uplifting the queens on Tennessee! Those ladies are all so strong and brave and I know tonight was definitely the best of a tricky situation for everyone. Thanks for shedding light for our friends who definitely need our hand these days. We appreciate it," the drag performer wrote.
Several other states, including Idaho, Kentucky, North Dakota, Montana, Oklahoma and Utah, are considering similar bans on drag performances. The governor of Arkansas recently signed a bill that puts new restrictions on "adult-oriented" performances. While initially targeting drag shows, that bill was scaled back after complaints of discrimination.
The Tennessee drag show ban was temporarily blocked in March by a federal judge.
Lizzo also shouted out Sesame Street character Elmo during her performance, with the popular children's show puppet making an appearance. Elmo's official Instagram account later commented on Lizzo's post, writing that he felt "special" for being able to speak during Lizzo's performance.

A Vermont elementary school is reportedly removing "male" and "female" language from its fifth grade science lessons covering the human body, puberty and reproduction.
In a letter sent home to parents at Founders Memorial School on April 20, the principal announced "gender-inclusive language" would now be used in the science and health unit.
Teachers would now only use "gender-inclusive language" in these lessons in order to "align our curriculum with our equity policy," school principal Sara Jablonski wrote in a letter shared on social media.

Terms like "male" and "boy" would be replaced with "person who produces sperm." Likewise, "female" and "girl" would be replaced with a "person who produces eggs."
The school said it would be working on editing worksheets to reflect these language changes. Parents were also given the opportunity to review the lesson materials in the school's main office.
The letter was sent to parents' rights group Parents Defending Education which shared it on Twitter.
Fox News Digital reached out to the Essex Westford School District and Founders Memorial administration for comment.
Parents Defending Education blasted the changes in a statement to Fox News Digital.
"Speaking about anyone in this way is dehumanizing in any context but these new language rules specifically apply to a health unit for 5th graders about puberty and reproduction," a spokesperson said.
"It is clear that the school has decided to be derelict in their duty to educate students in the name of equity. If anyone is wondering what it looks like when an elementary school has been captured by gender ideology, this is it," the spokesperson continued.
In June 2021, the Essex Westford School District school board adopted a new equity policy. Under the policy, schools would "use anti-racist and LGBTQIA+ affirming perspectives to inform curriculum decisions starting in Pre-K," The Burlington Free Press reported.

NBA legend Dwyane Wade: 'Family would not be accepted or feel comfortable' in Florida | Fox News
Dwyane Wade brought South Florida three NBA championships over more than 14 full seasons with the Miami Heat but said in a recent interview he no longer lives in the Sunshine State.
Wade told Rachel Nichols in an interview on "Headliners" that he and his family no longer live in Florida over fears that he and his family would not "feel comfortable there." He suggested the move had something to do with legislation that banned school employees or third parties from giving classroom instruction on "sexual orientation" or "gender identity" in kindergarten through third grade.
The original bill, which passed last year, has been dubbed the "Don’t Say Gay" bill by Democrats who falsely claim it bans any discussion pertaining to being gay in the state's schools. President Biden called it a "hateful bill" last February.
Wade’s 15-year-old child Zaya came out as a transgender girl, and the former NBA star fought and won in Los Angeles court to legally change her name and gender despite objections from her biological mother.
"That's another reason why I don't live in that state," Wade told Nicholas, via People. "A lot of people don't know that. I have to make decisions for my family, not just personal, individual decisions," the former NBA star continues.
"I mean, obviously, the tax [situation] is great. Having Wade County is great. But my family would not be accepted or feel comfortable there. And so that's one of the reasons why I don't live there."
Wade's ex-wife, Siohvaughn Funches-Wade, had prevented Zaya from receiving an updated birth certificate, but the NBA legend said it was in his daughter's "best interest."
"This Petition is about empowering Zaya to live her truth," a November court document said regarding Zaya, who has identified as a female since she was 12.
"A court order affirming her identity will allow Zaya to live more comfortably and honestly in all aspects of her life — from simple introductions and food orders, to applying for a driver's license and filling out college applications."
