READY TO FIGHT… (Daily Mail) First wave of 750 paratroopers leaves for the Middle East — soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division, Immediate Response Force, deployed from Fort Bragg to Kuwait on New Year's Day — in response to attack on the US embassy in Baghdad, with thousands more set to deploy after Trump said Iran would pay a 'big price.' On New Year’s Eve we saw a violent assault on the US embassy in Baghdad by a mob of 6,000 supposedly pro-Iran militiamen (at first they’d said “dozens”). The attack was repelled by a rapid reaction force of 100 Marines and the so-called militiamen withdrew from the area. But now Iran and USA are in a tit-for-tat escalation of violence.
(Hake reported two days ago that: The riot against the U.S. Embassy was supposedly a reaction to US bombing and killing 25 soldiers, which was a reaction to pro-Iran forces supposedly firing dozens of rockets and killing an American contractor.)
The Pentagon says they may deploy up to 4,000 troops… in response to the Baghdad unrest. The alert brigade of roughly 4,000 paratroopers, known as the DRB -- the Division Ready Brigade -- has been told to prepare for a possible deployment in the days ahead. (WAS DAILY MAIL JUST MAKING UP NAMES?) Defense Secretary Mark Esper announced this stuff.
Iran general warns that he’s not afraid of war… (Daily Mail quotes him as saying…) 'We have the power to break them several times over' … after Donald Trump threatened to make Tehran pay a 'BIG PRICE' for embassy attack. Trump said that he was holding Iran 'fully responsible' for Tuesday's carnage (CARNAGE? I SAW DAMAGE BUT NOT CARNAGE...) The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Commander Hossein Salami said 'We are not afraid of any war and we tell America to speak correctly with the Iranian nation.' HA! Trump had tweeted on Tuesday that Iran would be 'held fully responsible for lives lost, or damage incurred, at any of our facilities. They will pay a very BIG PRICE! This is not a Warning, it is a Threat.' The rioters were reportedly chanting Death to America, Death to Israel, and Down, Down, USA! (BTW: HAKE HEARD SOME REPORTS THAT IRAQI OFFICIALS WERE THERE DURING THE RIOTS, NOT HELPING THE U.S., HAKE HAS NOT CONFIRMED THEM.)
Wash. Post says: Expect tumultuous year in the Middle East… Libya's civil war reportedly has Russian mercenaries and Turkish forces. Yemen is still facing economic blockade and war. Syria has a so-called civil war (some dispute who the rebels really are). Large-scale “popular” protests are challenging Iraq’s government. Israel still deals with conflict with the Palestinians. And there are a lot of protest movements perhaps better described as riots throughout the region. Let’s push for a Trump win in 2020, because any Democrat (Imagine Buttigieg, Biden, Pocahontas, Bernie? *SHUDDER*) would be extremely destructive like Obama was.
(Drudge) U.S. combat deaths in Afghanistan highest in years… UH OH! (The Hill) Seventeen service members died in Afghanistan in 2019 … the highest number since 2015, according to a year-end tally compiled by the Department of Defense and reported by Army Times. Fourteen of the fallen service members were from the Army while three were Marines. The soldiers killed included eight Green Berets, an Army Ranger and three paratroopers. Back in 2018, 13 service members died, in 2017, 11 died, 2016, 9, and 2015, 10.

(The Hill) Every year for the past 5 years, we’ve lost between 9 and 17 soldiers in Afghanistan — 60 total since the beginning of 2015. NOT THAT MANY, BUT TOO MANY, RIGHT? Peace talks between the United States and the Taliban came to a halt in September when President Trump cancelled a planned meeting with Taliban and Afghan leaders. The president had considered decreasing U.S. troop levels in the country to 8,600.
NBC News reported in August that Trump told advisors that he wanted to pull all U.S. troops out of Afghanistan by November 2020. He has also threatened to close the U.S. embassy in Kabul, complaining that it is too large and expensive.
Troop levels in Afghanistan have been a source of tension between Trump and Senate Republicans for months, with GOP lawmakers repeatedly warning Trump not to pull soldiers out of the region while the Taliban remains a threat.
The Senate a year ago passed a resolution authored by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) that warned “the precipitous withdrawal” of U.S. forces from Syria or Afghanistan “could put at risk hard-won gains and United States national security.” WHATEVER, MITCH!
MEANWHILE ON THIS CONTINENT… (Drudge) The U.S. consulate warns employees as gun battles rock a Mexican border city… (Reuters) - The United States consulate in Mexico's border city of Nuevo Laredo issued a security alert on Wednesday, warning [about] gun battles and urging government employees to take precautions. Gun battles have killed at least three people this week in the northern city bordering the Texas city of Laredo. It[’s] one of the Mexican cities where the U.S. government has sent asylum seekers to wait as their cases are decided.
The U.S. Consulate there tweeted Wednesday evening, “We are aware of reports of gun battles in various areas of Nuevo Laredo. Monitor local media for updates.” Then they tweeted: "The consulate has received reports of multiple gunfights throughout the city of Nuevo Laredo. U.S. government personnel are advised to shelter in place." They also said to let family and friends know you’re safe. On Twitter, users purportedly from Laredo, TX, reported hearing gunfire ringing out from the neighboring Mexican city.
In a Twitter post late on Wednesday, Francisco Cabeza de Vaca, the governor of Tamaulipas, the state home to Nuevo Laredo, blamed the attacks on its Cartel of the Northeast. "After the cowardly attacks on the part of the Cartel of the Northeast in Nuevo Laredo, the (government of Tamaulipas) will not let down its guard and will continue acting with strength against criminals," he wrote.
Tension over the cartels intensified in November when suspected cartel members massacred three women and six children of U.S.-Mexican origin in northern Mexico. THOSE WERE THE MORMONS, RIGHT? U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to designate the groups as terrorist organizations in response to a series of bloody security breaches triggered by cartel gunmen.
(Drudge) Federal Debt Up $10 Trillion in 2010s… (CNS News) The federal debt increased by a record $10.8T (roughly) in the last decade, according to data published by the U.S. Treasury — increasing on average more than $1 trillion per year. From 2000-2009 the debt had increased by $6.5T. We started off at $12.3T debt at the end of 2009, the end of Obama’s first year, and we’re at $23.1T in debt now. That’s approximately $84,000 per household (for about 128.6M households).

Julián Castro stands up for the "reproductive JUSTICE" of "trans females" (Michael Knowles on Twitter)
GOOD NEWS! (Fox News) Julian Castro, age 45, the former Obama housing secretary (in his second term) and former San Antonio mayor, has dropped out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination. The only Latino in the field, Castro established himself as one of the more progressive (MEANING FULL-BLOWN SOCIALIST) members in the primary race but had been struggling to raise money and fight his way back onto the debate stage. He tweeted. “I’m so proud of everything we’ve accomplished together. I’m going to keep fighting for an America where everyone counts” (EXCEPT WHITE PEOPLE AND CHRISTIANS, AND BLACKS WHO GET RUN OUT OF THEIR COMMUNITIES BY ILLEGALS AND IMMIGRANTS.)
Castro sought to decriminalize border crossings, forcing the rest of the primary field to debate the controversial stance -- most of them ended up endorsing the idea. He faced a backlash in September after appearing to swipe at Biden's age by accusing him of forgetting his position on a health care issue. "I'm fulfilling the legacy of Barack Obama, and you're not," Castro also said to Biden. THAT’S NOT A POSITIVE THING! He was polling at 1% and did not qualify for the debates.
He’d also said, “I don’t believe only in reproductive freedom, I believe in reproductive JUSTICE!” WOOoOOoOOO! Went the crowd. He went on: “...just because… someone in the trans community, a trans female… is POOR, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have the right to exercise that right to choose, and so I absolutely would cover the right to have an abortion,” meaning taxpayer funds baby killing, Hake supposes. Also he was confused because SUPPOSED TRANS FEMALES ARE MEN. SO-CALLED TRANS MALES GET PREGNANT BECAUSE THEY’RE ACTUALLY WOMEN.
(Drudge) Farmers Got Billions From Taxpayers In '19, And Hardly Anyone Objected… I SAID IT WAS NO GOOD! But this is an NPR piece. Farm subsidies jumped to their highest level in 14 years, most of them paid out without any action by Congress. Government-subsidized crop insurance covered some losses from flooding. But other payments were unprecedented. The U.S. Department of Agriculture simply checks to compensate farmers for the low prices resulting from the trade war. They called it “Trump money,” and helped a lot. The USDA (Dept. of Ag.) announced another $16 billion in trade-related aid to farmers. It came on top of the previous year's $12 billion package, for a grand total of $28 billion in two years. About $19 billion of that money had been paid out by the end of 2019, and the rest will be paid in 2020.
"President Trump has great affection for America's farmers and ranchers. He knows that they're fighting the fight and that they're on the front lines," Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue told reporters while announcing the aid package.
NPR says it's an enormous amount of money, more than the final cost of bailing out the auto industry during the financial crisis of 2008. The auto industry bailout was fiercely debated in Congress. Yet the USDA created this new program out of thin air; it decided that an old law authorizing a USDA program called the Commodity Credit Corp. already gave it the authority to spend this money.
Studies by independent economists claim that the USDA is paying farmers roughly twice as much as the actual harm that they suffered from the trade war.
Some Cornell U. woman complains farmers have a huge impact on water quality, wildlife and climate change. And some Dem woman complains we cut $5B from people in need, meaning WELFARE. (That’s Rep. Marcia Fudge, D-Ohio, who sits on the House Agriculture Committee.)
