Maine male-hunt
(CNN & theSkimm Fri. 10/27/23) An intensive manhunt was still underway this morning for a suspect in Wednesday’s shooting rampage that left at least 18 dead and 13 injured in Lewiston, Maine, according to authorities. It is the deadliest mass shooting in the US this year. Law enforcement (more than 350 police officers) were combing through southern Maine for the 40-year-old suspect (“armed and dangerous”) — but his background in the US Army Reserves could make the effort challenging and dangerous.
One of the gunmale’s Army colleagues described him as a skilled marksman and among the best shooters in their Army Reserve Unit (I heard he never deployed, yet he was “mentally ill”). Officials are telling residents to stay vigilant, remain inside, and report any suspicious activity to authorities.
Shelter-in-place orders remained in effect for Lewiston and surrounding towns this morning. Authorities said the suspect had undergone a medical evaluation earlier this year after “behaving erratically” while training with his Army Reserve unit.
This is believed to be the 36th mass shooting (sic) in the US this year “alone” (says theSkimm). WAIT, theSkimm ladies yesterday said: The US has seen more than 500 mass shootings this year, for your “gun violence” propaganda.!!! WHICH ONE IS RIGHT?? They define them very differently, obv… OH, they mean 36th mass-KILLING, per a USA Today database, vs mass shootings per Axios…
US did AIR STRIKES!!
(CNN & theSkimm Fri. 10/27/23) The Middle East: Yesterday, the US carried out airstrikes on two sites in eastern Syria linked to Iranian-backed militia groups. Since last week, the groups have been suspected of carrying out more than a dozen drone and missile attacks against US forces in Iraq and Syria — injuring 21 service members.
Affirmative Action Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said “attacks against US forces are unacceptable and must stop.” WoooOooOooOOo, I’m scaaa-a-a-a-a-a-rr-r-r-r-rrd… Lloyd emphasized the strikes are “separate and distinct” from the Israel-Hamas war (“narrowly tailored in self-defense,” pshh) … but growing concern the war could engulf the rest of the region.
Meanwhile, the US deployed an additional 900 troops to the Middle East to bolster defenses amid the drone attacks — on top of US troops already in Iraq (2500) and Syria (900).
Israel’s military’s preparing next stages retaliation from deadly October 7 attacks. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) amassed a huge number of troops and military hardware along the border with Gaza, but so far focused on aerial bombardment — airstrikes intended “to create better terms for ground operations.” People wondering their endgame for Gaza.
Meanwhile, more than 200 hostages under Hamas in Gaza — Israel under pressure to consider allies’ interests before invading.

(CNN not theSkimm Fri. 10/27/23) At least 27 people were killed in Acapulco, Mexico, this week after Hurricane Otis made landfall in the beach town Wednesday as a Category 5 storm. “In all of Acapulco there is not a standing [electric] pole,” Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Thursday. Images and drone footage show structures torn apart, including several high-rises. Storm surge and rain inundated roads, leaving some to wade through several feet of murky water. Though the immediate threat has subsided, the region is just beginning the path to recovery. More than 1,000 workers are rushing to rebuild the grid so water service can be restored to the area, the president said.
Biden (Obama part III) coming for your children
(CNN or theSkimm Fri. 10/27/23) Targeting children: The White House. Earlier this week, the Biden administration asked Congress for $16 billion to fund child care programs. If approved, the money would go to more than 225,000 child care providers across the country. About 3.2 million children could be affected if funding doesn't come through, forcing millions of families to come up with a new child care plan. Programs were able to stay afloat with the help of COVID aid packages — but that piggy bank ran dry at the end of September. The request is part of a proposed $56 billion package for domestic needs.

Yesterday, a federal judge ordered state legislators to redraw Georgia's congressional district lines before the 2024 election, pointing to the Voting Rights Act. The court agreed that the Republican-drawn map illegally weakened the power of Black voters. Now, legislators have until early December to adopt a new district plan that contains a Black majority or near-majority district. This is one of at least half a dozen redistricting cases in the US that could influence which party wins control of the House in 2024. Also happening in the South: North Carolina Republicans signed off on a legislative map that could flip as many as four House seats in their favor. It’s not clear if the new map will be challenged in the courts.

Dean Phillips announced Thursday that he is kicking off a long-shot Democratic primary challenge to President Joe Biden. “I will not sit still, I will not be quiet in the face of numbers that are so clearly saying that we’re going to be facing an emergency next November,” Phillips said. The three-term congressman from Minnesota has argued that the president would be a weak general election candidate due to his age and low approval ratings compared to Republican front-runner Donald Trump. Phillips is set to formally launch his campaign later today, even as Democrats are seeking to unify around Biden, fend off any spoiler independent candidates, and lay out the administration’s accomplishments to voters.

Trump has been issued gag orders throughout his legal battles to restrict his ability to publicly target court personnel, potential witnesses, the special counsel overseeing his cases, and his staff.
