We don’t have a high trust society anymore
(CNN NOT theSkimm Tue. 11/14/23) Large stores, including Walmart and Costco, are rethinking self-checkout lanes due to widespread customer complaints and escalating retail crime. This comes as many US chains have already tried to tighten security features at self-checkouts, but shoplifters are still managing to take advantage of the lax oversight.
The best, most honest Supreme Court justices under attack
(CNN or theSkimm Tue. 11/14/23) The Supreme Court officially has a code of ethics (first time in history — an attempt to address “ethics” FAKE concerns). Up until yesterday, it was the only federal judiciary court that didn’t. Reports earlier this year sparked scrutiny of the high court, after revealing Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito accepted luxury trips from GOP megadonors and conservative activists (months of corrupt hit piece fake news stories alleging that conservative Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito accepted lavish gifts and took part in other “controversial” [meaning FINE] off-bench activities). Reports about how Justice Sonia Sotomayor used taxpayer-paid staff to secure book sales also raised eyebrows. Cue the CORRUPT Senate Judiciary Committee’s “investigation” into the Supreme Court's ethics practices. Now, SCOTUS says the code of ethics addresses the “misunderstanding” that the justices “regard themselves as unrestricted by any ethics rules.”
The nine-page code (CNN says all nine judges signed the 14-page document) — that outlines five rules. Among them: the justices can't use their title or prestige to “advance the private interests of the Justice or others.” The justices also have to keep their relationships — like family and financial — from influencing their “conduct or judgment.” In cases when “impartiality might reasonably be questioned,” the justices must recuse themselves. Still, some experts say the new code of ethics doesn't go far enough.
The rules aren't necessarily new, as judges in lower courts already follow them. It's also unclear who'd hold the high court accountable and investigate ethics lapses (unclear who will enforce the self-imposed code). Meanwhile, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) says the rules “fall short.” He says he'll continue to review the code to see if it meets the Senate Judiciary Committee's standards. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), a member of the committee, reportedly said the only thing that'd make Senate Dems happy is “if every conservative justice resigned en masse.”
Before SCOTUS returned for its new term, a DUMB poll found public trust and approval of the court standing near record lows (b/c we have the most divided and corrupt country ever, mostly evil people approve mostly evil). Without any clarity on how the justices will be held accountable, some say the new code of conduct could be more about the optics. DUUUUMB!
CNN: While intended to ensure judicial integrity (how about integrity of the masses?), analysts say the new rules show at least implicit recognition of the loss of useful idiot public confidence in some of the justice’s practices.

Large crowds expected at pro-Israel protest in Washington, DC
(CNN or theSkimm Tue. 11/14/23) Tens of thousands of people are expected to participate in a pro-Israel demonstration today at the National Mall in Washington, DC. They are marching to condemn the rise of antisemitic incidents amid the Israel-Hamas conflict and to demand the release of hostages being held by Hamas in Gaza.

Based President Trump!
(CNN NOT theSkimm Tue. 11/14/23) Former President Donald Trump is plotting a mass detention and deportation of undocumented immigrants should he regain power in 2024. Some of Trump’s plans include rounding up undocumented immigrants already in the US and placing them in detention camps to await deportation, a source familiar with the plans confirmed to CNN. On Saturday, Trump vowed to sign an executive order, on Day 1 of a potential second term, to cease funding the provision of shelter and transportation for undocumented immigrants. He has also publicly said he wants to revive many of his first-term policies to restrict both legal and illegal immigration — including reinstating a travel ban on predominantly Muslim countries and bringing back a Covid-era policy known as Title 42. Such plans would likely face fierce political and legal challenges.
Double-based President Trump!
(CNN or theSkimm Tue. 11/14/23) “He’s an artist with real estate. He sees the things that other people don’t.” — Donald Trump Jr., boasting about the Trump Organization’s portfolio while testifying Monday in the New York civil fraud trial against him, his father Donald Trump and their company. On the witness stand, the former president’s son gushed about the properties his father built, including some that the New York attorney general alleges were fraudulently inflated in value on Trump’s financial statements. Earlier in the trial, Trump Jr. claimed he wasn’t familiar with the valuations of the properties included on the financial statements.
We’re being driven MAD
(not CNN but theSkimm Tue. 11/14/23) What’s got the govt’s attention: Cognitive decline. New Census Bureau data shows more Americans are saying they're struggling with serious cognitive problems, according to a new report. That includes concentrating, making decisions or remembering. It’s younger Americans, aged 18 to 44, that are driving the trend. As for the cause, researchers are pointing their fingers at long covid. However, more research is needed into why the numbers around cognitive decline are increasing.
…Oh and speaking of America’s wellbeing, a new study found the life expectancy gap between men and women has increased to nearly six years — the widest the gap has been since 1996. It's attributed in part to covid and accidents like drug overdoses or car wrecks.
Applesauce recall
(CNN or theSkimm Tue. 11/14/23) The CDC is warning health care providers to be on the lookout for children who may have been exposed to lead after eating cinnamon-flavored applesauce products. State labs have found “extremely high” levels of lead in certain lots of applesauce pouches that have since been recalled by WanaBana, Schnucks and Weis. The pouches were sold by retailers including Amazon, Dollar Tree and Sam’s Club. Nearly two dozen cases of high blood lead levels in children have been reported in 14 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Washington.

(CNN or theSkimm Tue. 11/14/23) A new federal report says the climate crisis is being felt in every corner of the US and will worsen over the next 10 years with continued fossil fuel use. The Fifth National Climate Assessment, a congressionally mandated report due roughly every five years, warns that even though planet-warming pollution in the US is slowly decreasing, it’s not happening nearly fast enough to meet the nation’s targets. Later today, President Biden will deliver remarks on the report and is expected to unveil more than $6 billion in funding to strengthen climate resilience “by bolstering America’s electric grid, investing in water infrastructure upgrades, reducing flood risk to communities, and advancing environmental justice for all,” an administration official said.

(CNN or theSkimm Tue. 11/14/23) The UK Cabinet. Yesterday, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak (nice ENGLISH name) appointed former prime minister David Cameron as foreign secretary. The move comes amid some reshuffling on Downing Street. Sunak handed former Home Secretary Suella Braverman the pink slip after she called pro-Palestinian demonstrations “hate marches” and labeled homelessness a “lifestyle choice.” He tapped Foreign Secretary James Cleverly to take her job. Now, Cameron is back in government after resigning as PM following the UK's vote to leave the EU. Cameron said he’s “delighted to accept” Sunak’s offer. Critics say this could be a sign that Sunak is shifting the government to be more moderate, as he removes more conservative members of his cabinet.
