Give us Chinese Internet!
(CNN not theSkimm Thu. 11/16/23) China says it’s built the world’s fastest internet network that can operate at speeds of about 1.2 terabits each second — or fast enough to transfer data from 150 movies in one second. This could have broad implications for stock trading, business transactions and national security, analysts say.
Biden and Xi
(CNN & theSkimm Thu. 11/16/23) President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping are done with their meeting.
Reopening military-to-military communication. Talks between the US and Chinese military broke down last year when then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) visited Taiwan (WOMAN!). Now, amid spy balloons and tensions in the sky and sea, Biden has pushed Xi to reopen talks to avoid dangerous miscommunication. They also agreed for Beijing to rein in fentanyl. US officials say China produces key chemicals used to create the deadly narcotic in labs, including in Mexico. Last year, more than 72,000 people in the US died from overdoses involving synthetic opioids like fentanyl, according to the CDC. Now, China and the US have reportedly agreed to curb the flow of fentanyl via an anti-drug working group.
Xi said “Planet Earth is big enough” for both superpowers and that the two are “fully capable of rising above differences.” During a solo press conference, Biden described his conversations with Xi as “some of the most constructive and productive discussions we’ve had.” But the president doubled down on calling Xi a “dictator” and said it’s important to “trust, but verify” his relationship with China's president. China’s foreign ministry says that Biden’s comments were “extremely incorrect and irresponsible political manipulation.” Still, US allies and experts see the fact that the meeting happened as a win and as a step toward cooling tensions.
As US and China relations sit at a 40-year low, the leaders of two world superpowers are focusing on damage control. Now, at a time when there are two wars, many — especially Biden — are hoping that US-China relations could be one less thing to worry about.
CNN: President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping (Smile-shiii, jeen! peeEEENG!) met for high-stakes talks on Wednesday as Biden aimed to steady the relationship between the two nations. Biden touted that the meeting resulted in the resumption of communication between the US and Chinese militaries after Beijing cut those ties in August 2022. “We’re back to direct, open, clear, direct communications,” Biden said. However, just hours later, he doubled down on his previous comments and said he still believes Xi is a dictator. When asked about Biden’s latest comment at a Chinese Foreign Ministry briefing earlier today, a spokesperson called it “extremely erroneous.”
Useful idiot Starbucks employees
(CNN not theSkimm Thu. 11/16/23) Today, thousands of Starbucks employees are expected to walkout on the job, across hundreds of locations. It comes as more Starbucks stores’ employees look to unionize and ask for “better work conditions” and “pay.”
(Used to hear it was a great place to work, they’d work with you on school schedule, give you benefits, etc… but they’re liberals and they employ libs, and libs bring crime and bad conditions to neighborhoods.)
TX dealing with invasion
(CNN and theSkimm Thu. 11/16/23) Earlier this week, the Texas state House passed an immigration bill that makes illegal entry into Texas from another country a state crime. The bill's being called one of the strictest immigration policies in the US. The measure gives Texas officers the power to arrest undocumented migrants and state judges the ability to deport them. When an undocumented migrant is caught, they may be held at a detention center before going through a trial or deportation. Human rights advocates worry the policy could lead to racial profiling and undercut the protections of asylum seekers. Experts say it could lead to lawsuits and potentially strain relations with Mexico. Meanwhile, Gov. Greg Abbott (R) says he “look(s) forward to” getting the bill “across the finish line.”
CNN: Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is expected to sign a border bill that would create a new crime for entering the state illegally. The bill, SB4, gives law enforcement the power to arrest and order migrants to leave the US, an extraordinary step in the legal battle between the state and the federal government over its efforts to curtail illegal immigration. The legislation has sent ripples of fear throughout the Latino community in Texas — which makes up 40% of the state’s population. Civil rights organizations have called the measure “anti-immigrant” and warn it will lead to racial profiling of Latinos across the state. Separately, Gov. Abbott is expected to endorse Donald Trump on Sunday during an anticipated visit from the former president.

SpaceX
(CNN not theSkimm Thu. 11/16/23) Federal regulators have granted SpaceX permission to launch a test flight of its Starship system — the most powerful rocket ever built — following an explosive first attempt. The Starship spacecraft and its Super Heavy booster are at the center of SpaceX’s plans to eventually put humans on Mars, as well as aid NASA’s effort to return humans to the moon for the first time in more than 50 years. Starship is intended to serve as the lunar lander for the Artemis III mission, currently slated for 2025. And if the test flight once again fails, it could bog down NASA’s lunar exploration timeline. SpaceX is targeting a two-hour launch window on Friday morning from its facility in Boca Chica, Texas.
Israel-Palestine war
(CNN & theSkimm Thu. 11/16/23) President Biden accused Hamas of committing a “war crime” for operating what the US and Israel have claimed is a command center under the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza. Conditions at Al-Shifa, which has run out of fuel and is no longer considered operational, have deteriorated rapidly in recent days amid intense fighting, with doctors warning of a “catastrophic” situation for patients, staff, and displaced people inside. “The carnage in Gaza cannot be allowed to continue,” UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths said Wednesday. The war has caused more than 1,200 deaths in Israel and at least 11,255 in Gaza, according to the latest figures from authorities on both sides.
Hundreds of patients and thousands of civilians are still stuck inside Shifa Hospital, and 43 patients have reportedly died due to a lack of oxygen. Israel released a video it said showed Hamas weapons in the hospital. Hamas has denied the claims.
The UN Security Council adopted a resolution calling for a “humanitarian pause” in Gaza, with the US, Britain, and Russia abstaining. Israel’s prime minister has rejected calls for a ceasefire and says it has struck the house of Hamas’s leader, Ismail Haniyeh.
NBA star Draymond Green suspended for five games
(CNN or theSkimm Thu. 11/16/23) Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green has been suspended for five games for putting Rudy Gobert in a headlock during Tuesday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the NBA announced.
What’s the difference between yams and sweet potatoes?
(CNN not theSkimm Thu. 11/16/23) These two root vegetables often cause quite a bit of confusion, especially around Thanksgiving. But they are not related to one another and differ in taste, texture and appearance.
Sweet potatoes originated in North America, first joining market shelves alongside the white potato as far back as the late 1600s. But back then, the sweet potato was also white or yellow in color. In the 1930s, a new orange version was cultivated, and to differentiate it from the white sweet potatoes, farmers borrowed the slang phrase “yams” that slaves from West Africa had used to describe them. NOT READ: Sweet potatoes reminded them of an African vegetable called nyami ….
NOT READ: Today, the name “yams” has stuck as an interchangeable term for “sweet potatoes” in America. Generally speaking, if you’re reading a recipe (from Sweet Potato Pie to Candied Yams) it’s just sweet potatoes …
African yams have thick, brown, bark-like skin and yellow coloring. They can easily weigh up to 55 pounds. American sweet potatoes have thin, papery skin and that widely-recognized orange flesh (but can also come in a variety of colors, like yellow or purple).
African yams are much starchier than sweet potatoes and are closer to the texture of yucca. They taste earthy, a bit like a potato. Sweet potatoes are known for their smooth potato-like texture and sweet flavor.
NOT READ: MD has low unemployment, allegedly
(CNN or theSkimm Thu. 11/16/23) Maryland’s unemployment rate is 1.6%, the lowest in American history. This means employees in the Old State have the leverage to switch jobs and demand higher wages considering there is a smaller pool of available workers and more than 180,000 job openings, according to government figures.
NOT READ: AnTiSeMiTiSm drama
(CNN or theSkimm Thu. 11/16/23) QUOTE: “We take the issues of antisemitism and any other forms of hate extremely seriously.” — John Beckman, a spokesperson for New York University, commenting on a new lawsuit alleging that the school has failed to enforce its anti-discrimination policies. According to the suit, several Jewish students claim they have been “forced to run a campus gauntlet of verbal and physical harassment, threats, and intimidation,” especially since the October 7 Hamas terror attacks. NYU denies the claims and said it has taken “many steps” to provide a safe learning environment.
