YO, THEY DUG OUT THE MEN IN THE TUNNEL!

(theSkimm Wed. 11/29/23) All construction workers trapped in a tunnel in India have been rescued.

Earlier this month (SUNDAY NOV 12th), a landslide caused part of a nearly three-mile tunnel in northern India to collapse, trapping 41 workers underneath almost 200 feet of rubble. The rescue was expected to take just a few days. But a US-made drill broke down. For 17 days, people watched on as rescuers tried to get them out.

Digging by hand. In the meantime, rescuers managed to snake a pipe through the debris to keep workers supplied with food, water, and oxygen. The men inside also reportedly had regular contact with doctors on the scene, who gave them advice on how to stay calm and hopeful. After evacuating, the workers were greeted by cheers from relatives, friends, and onlookers. India's minister of road transport and highways, Nitin Gadkari, said he was “completely relieved and happy” that all of the workers were safe.

After nearly three weeks, all 41 men appear to be in good health, with no major injuries — good news for a country that had to wait 17 days for their rescue. (AND THE PLACE IS NEAR A CITY CALLED LUCKNOW!)

Presidential race

(CNN Wed. 11/29/23) The influential Koch network is throwing its money behind former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley in the Republican presidential primary, the group announced Tuesday. The decision could dramatically reshape the Republican field — roughly seven weeks before the Iowa caucuses — as Americans for Prosperity Action deploys its vast resources and standing army of conservative activists on behalf of the former US ambassador to the United Nations. The endorsement marks the latest sign that powerful Republican donors are coalescing behind Haley and bypassing former President Donald Trump. Still, Trump remains the Republican party’s front-runner in both national and early state polling, with Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis each jockeying to emerge as the main Trump alternative.

Fruit recall!

(CNN Wed. 11/29/23) Several large retailers in the US — including Publix, Walmart and Aldi — received recalled fruit, the FDA warned Tuesday. The batches of non-organic peaches, plums and nectarines have been linked with a Listeria outbreak that caused at least 11 illnesses in seven states, with 10 hospitalizations and one death, health officials said. The FDA notes that the fruit also went to companies that may have frozen or relabeled it. Anyone who has frozen peaches, plums or nectarines should throw them away if the products are or may be part of the recall. The FDA and the CDC are also investigating an ongoing salmonella outbreak linked with recalled cantaloupe products that’s caused at least 99 illnesses and two deaths in 32 states.

Israel-Palestine war drama

(CNN Wed. 11/29/23) A sixth set of hostages is expected to be freed by Hamas today as diplomatic efforts are underway to maintain the pause in fighting. Over the first five days of the truce in Gaza, Hamas has released 81 hostages, primarily women and children. In exchange, Israel has freed 180 Palestinians from prison — many of whom were detained but never charged. The White House said it remains hopeful that some Americans may be released today after previously saying two women were expected to be freed as part of the deal announced last week. So far, a 4-year-old American-Israeli citizen is the only American hostage to be released since the truce began, to the deep disappointment of US officials.

  • France banning smoking on beaches and parks  //  Zoom fatigue is hurting students, compared with real life  //  George Santos 3rd expulsion vote today  //  Revolver News: Harvard reveals South Africa messed itself up with Affirmative Action / CRT  //

France is VIOLATING your RIGHTS!

(CNN Wed. 11/29/23) France will ban smoking on beaches and public parks with an aim to create a “tobacco-free generation by 2032,” the country’s health minister Aurélien Rousseau said Tuesday. Smoking in forests and some other public spaces, including close to schools, will also be banned in the country. The minister did not give an exact timeline but hinted that people could face fines as early as next year. “The fun, leisure aspect of smoking has to go,” Rousseau said, adding that “200 preventable tobacco-related deaths per day… is a number we should not get used to.” The move comes after France announced in September it would ban disposable e-cigarettes.

Real life is better than Zoom, duh!

(theSkimm Wed. 11/29/23) What could be taking a toll on students… Zoom fatigue. A recent study found that students taking classes on Zoom experienced higher levels of sadness and exhaustion compared to those who took them in person. The study looked at a group of 35 college students divided into two groups: half attended a lecture in person and the other half watched online. Researchers recorded the electrical activity in the students’ hearts and brains. They found rising heart rates (a sign of stress), and falling heart rates associated with mental fatigue, amongst the students online. Researchers also saw increased brain activity associated with fatigue in the online students. While remote workers' may not be logging on for lectures, they can still feel bogged down by online meetings. Other research says excessive eye contact, catching glimpses of yourself on camera, and sitting for a long time can lead to Zoom fatigue. Researchers recommend moving around and avoiding back-to-back meetings.

Leave George Santos alone!

(theSkimm Wed. 11/29/23) The Lame-o House could vote to expel Rep. George Santos (R-NY) today or tomorrow after Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA, former mayor of Long Beach) called a third vote. It comes after a recent congressional report accused him of using campaign funds on purchases ranging from Hermès (French luxury design brand) to OnlyFans. LOL

Harvard’s Shocking Admission: Affirmative Action and Critical Race Theory Killed South Africa

(Revolver.News… Nov 29, 2023) Life expectancies grew until the early 1990s, till around 1994…, when they suddenly went into reverse, driven heavily by an explosion of AIDS. Primary school enrollment in the country peaked in the early ’90s but then started to go down, reaching only the low 80s by the mid-2010s.

From 1997 onward, South Africa has never come close to matching the (already high) unemployment rate it had in 1994.

HARVARD: Income per capita has been falling for over a decade. Unemployment over 33% the world’s highest, youth unemployment exceeds 60%. Poverty 55.5% based on the national poverty line, yet many more households depend on government transfers to sustain meager livelihoods.

They got rid of their white talent! Black communism!

South Africa was a darling of the global neoliberal order. The nation hosted a soccer World Cup 2010…  schmaltzy feel-good movie 2009 with Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela, and liberal Matt Damon (liberal Clint Eastwood’s Invictus movie, about the 1995 Rugby World Cup).

The BRIC countries of Brazil, Russia, India, and China gave South Africa a sympathy invite to join the newly-renamed BRICS cabal.

A report from Harvard sums it up in vague terms.

HARVARD: We identify four strongly interacting causes underlying such systematic collapse: gridlock in the ruling coalition that prevents action; an ideology that justifies excluding society from participating in state-reserved activities, over-burdening of public entities with goals beyond their core missions and capabilities, and political patronage that has corrupted both the state and the ruling coalition.
