Hake notes from JLP…

Fri 2-23-24 Hr 1

JLP recounts counseling with a woman who behind the not-her is one of the kindest people he’s met. But she’s trapped and doesn’t know it. SHORT: How come human beings don’t know it’s abnormal to try to hurt other human beings? Why don’t you see the thrill you get from trying to hurt even your own children? And what you do to others, you’re really doing it to yourself. It’s not normal. It’s not you. Something else is driving you to do evil — and sometimes you think it’s love, but it’s hate. …. Great hour…

Fri 2-23-24 Hr 2

Demons overreacting to a little light. This is what you should be doing with thoughts — they go away if you don’t overreact to them. …  //  Calls: Russ atheist on the Bible…  //  Alex in CO (1st) his mother’s his best friend, he’s 26… GREAT CALL…

Fri 2-23-24 Hr 3

Good hour… Hake didn’t take notes…

Moon landing!

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 2-23-24) For the first time since 1972, a US spacecraft has touched down on the moon.

The unmanned lunar lander named Odysseus, aka “Odie,” is delivering cargo for NASA. Also onboard: Jeff Koons' “Moon Phases” — a set of 125 miniature moon sculptures. NASA paid Intuitive Machines, the company that built Odie, $118 million to carry the scientific instruments to the moon. It comes as NASA prepares for its Artemis missions, which are slated to start next year in efforts to establish the first long-term lunar presence. Now, after a landing that had many in suspense, Intuitive Machines says Odie has started to send data.

Odie will help explore the moon’s south polar region, where frozen water has been detected in the craters there. It’s unclear how much water there could be, but if there’s enough to fill up a Stanley Cup, then it could be a game changer. Astronauts could use the water for drinking and rocket fuel. The layers of ice in the craters could also give more insight into the history of the solar system. Intuitive Machines, which is now the first private company to have a successful moon landing, reportedly has two other lunar lander missions planned this year.

AT&T outage

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 2-23-24) What's dialing down concerns… AT&T. The company said an initial review found an error, not a cyberattack, led to yesterday's widespread outage. More than 70,000 wireless customers lost access to AT&T’s network across the country, prompting some federal regulators to wonder if a cyberattack was to blame. Many customers panicked, even though people could use their phones if they were connected to WiFi. Elsewhere the effects were more serious, with disrupted 911 services in several cities like San Francisco. AT&T said it was trying to expand its network when the error happened. Still, the Federal Communications Commission is looking into the incident.

Presidential race

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 2-23-24) South Carolina voters will head to the polls on Saturday for the state’s Republican primary election. Former President Donald Trump holds a wide lead among likely GOP voters, but his sole challenger, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, said she would “absolutely” remain in the race through Saturday’s contest in her home state. Performing well in primaries and caucuses equals delegates, and the larger goal is amassing the magic number of 1,215 delegates to win the party’s nomination. As of now, Trump has 63 delegates to Haley’s 17, with 50 at stake in South Carolina this weekend. On the Democratic side, South Carolina already delivered President Joe Biden his first official primary victory of the 2024 campaign on February 3.

**Wendy Williams has what Bruce Willis got! (I heard)

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 2-23-24) Who(m) people are wishing well… Wendy Williams. Yesterday, the former talk show host’s team said she was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia and aphasia last year. Both conditions can lead to difficulties with language. Her team says she's receiving treatment and can still “do many things for herself.” The news comes after the abrupt ending of her show in 2022.

CNN: A care team for the former talk show host shared updates Thursday on Williams’ health challenges.

*Ukraine propaganda

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 2-23-24) On the eve of the two-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, residents in the first major Ukrainian city to fall have described the shelling from Russian forces as the worst yet. Tensions are heightened across swaths of Ukraine, but drones and artillery are still pounding the now-liberated city of Kherson at a remarkable frequency, suggesting that Russian forces are not burdened with the same ammunition shortages that Ukrainian troops say they face. Separately, President Biden met Thursday with the wife and daughter of the late Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny and said sanctions will be imposed on President Vladimir Putin “who is responsible for his death.” A US Treasury official also said the administration will impose new sanctions today on more than 500 targets to levy consequences against Russia.

**Google’s AI stinks! (allegedly)

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 2-23-24) Who’s hitting the pause button… Google. Yesterday, the tech giant said it’s temporarily stopping the image generator feature in its AI model Gemini. It comes after backlash on social media, with users saying prompts led Gemini to create historically inaccurate images. One user, who asked Gemini to generate an image of a 1943 German soldier, shared the image generator’s results: people of color as Nazi-era soldiers. Now, some say Google may be over-correcting for racial bias risk in its model. It comes as Google tries to catch up in the AI development space. Google said it will re-release an updated version of Gemini “soon.”

Toyota Recall (great movie, I heard… jk)

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 2-23-24) Toyota is recalling about 280,000 vehicles because they may “creep forward” when in neutral. “Certain parts of the transmission may not immediately disengage when the vehicle is shifted to the neutral position,” the carmaker said in a statement, adding the issue could lead to “an increased risk of a crash.” The recall includes certain Toyota Tundra, Sequoia and Lexus LX 600 vehicles manufactured between 2022 and 2024. Toyota also issued recalls for an additional 23,000 vehicles over software problems and safety issues with the head restraints on some seats. The company said it will inform the owners of recalled vehicles by late April and update the malfunctioning software.

*DeSantis 2028? Ugh, wake up, man.

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 2-23-24) QUOTE: “I haven’t ruled anything out.” — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, saying he has no intention of serving as Trump’s vice president should he win in November (SO HAS HE RULED THAT OUT?), but is open to the possibility of another White House run in 2028. DeSantis dropped out of the Republican presidential primary last month shortly after losing the Iowa caucuses. His comments came after Trump teased the media during a Fox News town hall on Tuesday by acknowledging that there are at least six people on his shortlist of potential running mates.

*IVF in AL

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 2-23-24) At least 3 fertility clinics in Alabama have paused in vitro fertilization programs in the wake of the state Supreme Court’s ruling last week that says frozen embryos are children. A growing number of Alabama medical personnel say they are halting IVF treatments amid concerns that discarding unwanted embryos could make them liable for wrongful death.

*Who’s ever heard of the Great Smoky Mountains?

(CNN or theSkimm Fri 2-23-24) Millions of visitors flock to America’s national parks each year, but a select number of sites consistently prove to be the most popular. Known for its renowned hikes and majestic meadows, the Great Smoky Mountains just landed its usual No. 1 spot as the most visited park in the country, followed by the world-famous Grand Canyon in second place.
