*Remember that Asteroid that got hit?

(CNN or theSkimm Wed 2-28-24) A few years ago, NASA intentionally crashed a spacecraft into an asteroid to see if the impact would change its direction. The celestial object now appears to be a “very different body” akin to a giant debris plume of floating material, according to a new study.

**Michigan full of unamerican people

(CNN & esp. theSkimm Wed 2-28-24) Primary in Michigan. Yesterday, President Biden won the state's Democratic presidential primary after facing backlash over his handling of the Israel-Hamas war. About 15% of voters cast a ballot for “uncommitted,” instead of picking Biden. The results depict the growing criticism Biden has faced organized resistance from progressives, as well as from many Arab and Muslim Americans, for not demanding a permanent cease-fire. Ahead of the contest, state and local leaders, including Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), called on voters to cast their ballots as “uncommitted” to send Biden the message to “change course on Gaza.” Michigan — home to one of the largest Arab and Muslim American communities in the US — is considered a litmus test for how the Biden admin’s handling of the conflict could play out in the November election.

…A Trump-Biden rematch is looking more likely. Former President Trump easily beat former UN ambassadress Nikki Haley (failed SC Governess) in Michigan’s Republican presidential primary last night, securing his sixth straight win. Roughly 68% of Republicans voted for Trump while 27% voted for the RINO divider

**Invasion!

(CNN or theSkimm Wed 2-28-24) President Biden and Donald Trump are set to visit the US-Mexico border on the same day this week. During Biden's visit Thursday, the president is expected to meet with border patrol agents, law enforcement and local leaders in Brownsville, Texas, to discuss the need for a border agreement. Sources say Biden is considering sweeping executive action to restrict the ability of migrants to seek asylum at the border if they cross illegally. At the same time, Trump is expected to give remarks in Eagle Pass, Texas, after recently receiving the endorsement of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who has taken steps to undermine Biden's authority on border policy.

HAKE NEWS, Hr 2 | Wed 2-28-24

  • TX wildfires  //  Marijuana abuse and heart disease linked, per study  //  Toyota Tacomas’ axle bolts falling off!  //  IVF protection in AL amid protection of unborn embryos  //

*TX wildfires

(CNN or theSkimm Wed 2-28-24) At least five uncontrolled wildfires are threatening Texas Panhandle towns and forcing residents to evacuate. The Smokehouse Creek Fire, which ignited Monday afternoon, has scorched more than 370,000 acres of land, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service. Meanwhile, several other wildfires are burning nearby, fueled by high winds and dry air. The threat has sparked evacuation orders for several communities in northern Texas and some bordering Oklahoma towns. Local authorities have received reports of burned structures and charred farms, where some ranchers told CNN they had no time to evacuate their livestock.

*New study finds alarming risks of daily marijuana use

(CNN or theSkimm Wed 2-28-24) The link between heart disease and marijuana use should be a “call to action,” some health experts say.

*Toyota Tacoma recall (2022-2023 — axle bolts falling off!)

(CNN or theSkimm Wed 2-28-24) 381,000 Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks have been recalled because bolts in the axles could loosen and fall off. The trucks involved are model year 2022 and 2023, Toyota said, adding letters will be sent out to owners of the affected vehicles by late April.

**IVF in AL

(CNN or theSkimm Wed 2-28-24) Alabama’s lawmakers are scrambling to protect in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Earlier this month, Alabama’s Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are children, raising questions over the liability of destroying them. It’s caused legal uncertainty as IVF usually creates more than one embryo, and it’s not uncommon for them to be discarded if there are abnormalities or if patients don’t want to use them. To avoid potential prosecution, at least three IVF clinics in the state paused operations. In response, Alabama lawmakers introduced legislation to try to clarify the law and dispel fears.

Last week, an Alabama House Democrat intro’d a bill that asserts a fertilized egg or embryo outside of a uterus is not considered an unborn child under state law. Meanwhile, two Republican measures proposed in the state Senate would each grant legal immunity to clinics providing IVF treatment. But they fall short of changing the state's definition of an embryo. The GOP legislation could be more likely to pass, given that Republicans have a supermajority in the state. One of the GOP bill's sponsors says he expects a measure to reach Republican Gov. Kay Ivey's desk in a few weeks.

There's some action at the federal level. Today, Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) plans to bring up a vote on legislation to protect access to IVF nationally. But while Democrats have been vocal about protecting IVF, Republicans have been harder to pin down. Already, some GOP senators have reportedly said they plan to block Duckworth's bill. In the House, some GOP members say they fully support a family’s right to use IVF.

NOT READ: But last year, 125 House Republicans signed on to the Life at Conception Act which — as its name implies — defines life at conception. The bill would essentially ban all abortions in the US and leave IVF treatment in jeopardy. Now, these lawmakers are being asked to clarify their position given the widespread reaction to the Alabama ruling.

When Roe v. Wade was overturned, there were fears that IVF would be next on the list to be restricted. A year and a half later, that's proving to be true. Now, lawmakers have to decide where the line ends and how to appeal to voters on this key election issue.

 Related Stories:

CNN: Alabama’s Senate and House proposed bills on Tuesday to protect anyone who provides in vitro fertilization treatments in the state. The proposed legislation follows the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that frozen embryos are children — an unprecedented decision that said those who destroy frozen embryos can be held liable for wrongful death. Since the ruling, at least three fertility treatment facilities in Alabama have halted certain IVF treatment programs amid concerns their medical personnel could be at legal risk. Separately, a proposed bill in Florida that would define a fetus as an “unborn child” and expand liability for wrongful death lawsuits for unborn children has stalled indefinitely in the wake of the Alabama ruling.

*Israel-Hamas war drama

(CNN or theSkimm Wed 2-28-24) Israel, Hamas, and Qatar have cautioned against President Biden’s optimism that a ceasefire in Gaza could be reached by the end of this week. Biden said Monday that he hoped there would be a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict by “next Monday,” as the death toll in Gaza approaches 30,000. But an Israeli official told CNN Tuesday that Israel was “surprised that he [Biden] used the word Monday and that he used the word ceasefire.” Basem Naim, a member of Hamas’ political bureau, told CNN Tuesday that the group was unaware of any ceasefire agreement that could be brokered by next Monday. “There is nothing,” Naim said. Qatar, which along with the US is a key mediator in negotiations between Israel and Hamas, has also hinted at a different timeline.
