Happy Leap Year! // TX wildfires // Presidential Immunity case in Supreme Court //
It’s Leap Year!
(CNN or theSkimm Thu 2-29-24) Today is February 29, a leap day that occurs every four years to keep our calendar in sync with the seasons. Without the extra days, the summer we generally experience in June would eventually arrive in December after several centuries. (A real year is 365 ¼ days! Or 52 and about 5/28ths weeks)
TX fires
(CNN or theSkimm Thu 2-29-24) A sudden shift of wind direction in the Texas Panhandle this week contributed to the explosion in size of the Smokehouse Creek wildfire, which has burned at least 850,000 acres in Texas and another 31,000 acres in Oklahoma. It is now the second-largest fire in Texas state history, exceeding the size of Rhode Island. The blaze has burned dozens of structures and killed at least one person since igniting on Monday. It is still just 3% contained, according to state forest services. Calmer winds helped firefighters’ efforts on Wednesday, but forecasts show poor weather conditions could ramp up Friday and fan the flames again over the weekend.
Presidential Immunity to be considered in the Supreme Court
(CNN & theSkimm Thu 2-29-24) Yesterday, the Supreme Court decided they’ll weigh in on a “consequential case” involving President Trump —
Presidential immunity — whether Trump is immune, shielded from [federal] criminal prosecution on charges in Special Counsel Jack Smith’s 2020 election interference case. Out of the four criminal cases against Trump, many consider Smith’s to be one of the most serious legal challenges (HE “WHITE”) to threaten the Trump campaign. Trump’s maintained he can’t be prosecuted for what he did in office. Earlier this month, he asked the “Supreme Court” to step in after a lower court “ruled” he didn't have immunity and had to stand trial. … scheduled arguments for the week of April 22…. decision is expected by late June.
If they don’t side with Trump, the trial could overlap with the Republican National Convention or November election. If they side with Trump, the InJustice Department charges’d be dismissed.
The high court’s also expected to decide whether Trump can remain on Colorado’s primary ballot. Just yesterday, Illinois became the third state to boot Trump from their primary ballot, citing his role in the Jan 6 “insurrection.” Trump’s expected to appeal the Illinois ruling — it’s on hold for now.
For the second time this year, the quote-unquote “conservative-majority” Supreme Court — with three Trump-appointees (all RINOs) — will hear arguments in a case involving President Trump. … could set precedents (sweeping implications) for presidencies and future elections.
Developing:
In the GOP: Yesterday, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said he’d step down as GOP Senate leader in November. McConnell plans to serve the rest of his term as senator until 2027(!). His announcement kicked off the race for his replacement. On the list: Three Johns (John Thune, John Cornyn, John Barrasso)

Political Mess
Again, McConnell: (CNN & theSkimm Thu 2-29-24) QUOTE: “I still have enough gas in my tank to thoroughly disappoint my critics, and I intend to do so with all the enthusiasm with which they’ve become accustomed.” — Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, announcing he will step down as “leader” (of Senate Republican Conference) in November, setting up a high-stakes race for his successor (for “the next generation of leadership”).
Far-left Politico: Somewhat confusingly, all three candidates are white men named John: Minority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.), former whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) and GOP Conference Chair John Barrasso (R-Wyo.).
IVF: (Not CNN but theSkimm Thu 2-29-24) Also in the Senate: A Republican senator blocked an effort to protect IVF (in vitro fertilization, literally meaning “in-glass”) against efforts to “protect” it nationally, saying it violates religious freedoms. Now, Democrats in the federal govt are vowing to continue trying amid the fallout from the Alabama Supreme Court’s ruling. (PRETENDING TO SWOOP IN AND SAVE WANNABE MOTHERS WHO WAITED TOO LONG TO HELP MAKE BABIES!)
Bitcorn!
(CNN not theSkimm Thu 2-29-24) Bitcoin, the world’s most popular cryptocurrency, is nearing its all-time high of around $69,000 set in November 2021. The value currently stands at just under $63,000, data shows. It is up a whopping 20% in just five days, partly driven by billions of dollars flowing into the crypto industry after the US Securities and Exchange Commission approved bitcoin exchange-traded funds last month. The other major factor at play is the upcoming “halving” of bitcoin, which reduces the rate of new coins entering circulation. It takes place roughly every four years and, in theory, pushes the price of bitcoin higher because it creates more scarcity of an already finite currency.
Trump and Biden at the border today
(CNN not theSkimm Thu 2-29-24) President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump will visit different sectors of the southern US border today, setting up a split screen between the likely 2024 candidates as they spell out dueling arguments on the migrant crisis. Biden, who’s been on the defensive over the border for much of his term, will meet with US Border Patrol agents in Brownsville, Texas. Trump is expected to make remarks in Eagle Pass, the scene of a border showdown where authorities have seen a high number of migrant crossings. He is also set to meet with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who has boasted about busing tens of thousands of migrants to Democratic-led cities over the past two years.
NOT READ…
NOT READ: Gaza drama
(CNN not theSkimm Thu 2-29-24) Gaza has surpassed the grim milestone of 30,000 deaths since Israel’s war with Hamas began in October, according to the health ministry in the besieged enclave. The towering figure underscores the horrific ordeal for Palestinians in the territory, during which Israel’s bombing and ground campaigns have displaced the vast majority of the population and put more than 2 million people at “imminent risk” of famine, the United Nations said. The US is now looking into possible airdrops of aid into Gaza as the dire humanitarian crisis worsens. Earlier this week, Jordan, Egypt, the UAE, Qatar and France airdropped relief aid in various areas of the Gaza Strip — a sign of how desperate the situation has become.
