*Trump on Aborsh: Leave it to the States (was open to national ban earlier)
(CNN or theSkimm Tue 4-9-24) Former President Trump is clarifying his stance on abortion.
In a video yesterday, Trump said abortion restrictions should be left up to the states and declined to support a national limit on the procedure. His position comes weeks after suggesting he’d be open to a federal ban on abortions at around 15 weeks of pregnancy — something anti-abortion rights groups have called on Trump to endorse. As he campaigns to win back the White House, Trump has been trying to strike a balance between keeping his base happy and trying to sway swing voters. The former president's attempts to navigate his stance on abortion is shining a spotlight on the Republican Party's continued struggle to present a united vision on the contentious issue.
As president, Trump appointed the three conservative Supreme Court justices who ultimately helped overturn Roe v. Wade. Trump took credit for doing so in his statement. Still, the high court's ruling opened up a Pandora’s box: Texas’s abortion ban faced lawsuits, Alabama’s IVF ruling caused confusion, and one woman has even been charged with murder. As these issues play out in the headlines and courts, Democrats made gains by making abortion a top issue in the 2022 midterms. But Republicans have struggled as they head into the general election. That's as one survey found that abortion is the top issue for one in eight voters.
theSkimm: After years of trying to overturn Roe v. Wade, Republicans at all levels — including Trump — are struggling to navigate the political fallout as they court swing voters and try to appease their base. It could cost some of them their seats in November.

**Student loan leeches and Biden
(CNN or theSkimm Tue 4-9-24) What could rollback student loans… President Biden’s new plan. Yesterday, he announced a student debt relief plan that could help more than 30 million borrowers. The White House said it would clear all student loans for over 4 million people, eliminate accrued interest for 23 million borrowers, and forgive $5,000 or more for 10 million others. Biden said his new proposal — a scaled back version of his 2020 campaign promise — would help the economy by giving people more buying power. Critics say student loan forgiveness is unfair to taxpayers who didn't take out the loans and reportedly warn it could cause universities to jack up tuition costs. The plan still needs to be finalized and is likely to face legal challenges that could take months to resolve.

**Catholics not for trans ‘affirming “care”’
(CNN or theSkimm Tue 4-9-24) Who gave their take on gender theory… The Vatican. Yesterday, the Catholic Church rejected gender-affirming surgery and the idea that one’s gender can be changed. The Vatican laid out its stance in the “Infinite Dignity” doctrine, which has been five years in the making and outlines what the Church sees as threats to humanity. It received Pope Francis’ approval. Advocates for LGBTQIA+ Catholics criticized the Vatican’s opinion as outdated and warned it could lead to anti-trans violence.
The document comes months after the pope affirmed that transgender people can be baptized and serve as godparents and supported blessings for same-sex couples.
**Transgender madness
(CNN or theSkimm Tue 4-9-24) QUOTE: “We hope other sport governing bodies don’t also succumb to political pressure, and instead fight for a future of sports where everyone belongs.” — Hudson Taylor, founder of Athlete Ally, an organization that works to eliminate transphobia and homophobia in sports. Taylor’s remarks on Monday came after the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes (NAIA, Hake ran under them at APU, “Christian university”) — effectively banned "transgender" (MTF) "women" from its women’s sports programs.
The NAIA governs intercollegiate athletics for more than 83,000 student-athletes, according to its website.
(Google) Most are private institutions. Many are religious. There are a large number of both Protestant (of many denominations) and Catholic institutions. Each institution has much more freedom to be themselves. (What is the NAIA? | The Recruiting Code)
**Black actor punished for “DV”
(CNN or theSkimm Tue 4-9-24) Who won’t be spending time behind bars… Jonathan Majors. Yesterday, a New York judge sentenced the former Marvel actor to a mandatory 52-week in-person domestic violence program for assaulting and harassing his former girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. Majors could face jail time if he doesn’t comply.
During the sentencing, ungracious(?) Grace Jabbari said “he’s not sorry. He has not accepted responsibility, and he will do this again.”
**Ethan Crumbley parents Attack on 2A, whites
(CNN or theSkimm Tue 4-9-24) James and Jennifer Crumbley, the parents of the teenager (Ethan Crumbley) who killed four students in the 2021 school shooting in Oxford, Michigan, are set to be sentenced on manslaughter charges today.
They each face up to 15 years in prison. The sentencing represents the end of a dramatic saga that has set a precedent of who can be held responsible for a mass shooting, aside from the perpetrator.
Both parents were found guilty in separate trials this year for allowing their 15-year-old son to have a gun and ignoring signs of his spiraling mental health. It was the first time the parents of a school shooter have been charged with such serious crimes even though they did not pull the trigger. (Even tho blacks do more mass shootings, and nobody holds their mothers responsible. Or do they? Just doesn’t make MSM news…?)

**International court rules Switzerland violated human rights in landmark climate case (RIDICULOUS)
(CNN or theSkimm Tue 4-9-24) An international court in France has ruled Switzerland’s failure to adequately tackle the climate crisis was in violation of human rights — a landmark climate judgment that experts say could have a ripple effect across the globe.
The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg delivered its ruling on a case brought by more than 2,000 older Swiss women against Switzerland, who argued that climate change-fueled heat waves undermined their health and quality of life and put them at risk of dying. It’s the first time the court has ruled on climate litigation. SM_H
Southern storms
(CNN or theSkimm Tue 4-9-24) More than 30 million people from Texas to western Mississippi are at risk for severe weather today, less than a week after a powerful storm system swept through the region and killed at least three people. “Several tornadoes, a couple of which should be strong, significant large hail, and damaging winds” are expected, the Storm Prediction Center warned. About 9 million people in parts of eastern Texas and western Louisiana had an enhanced, or Level 3 of 5, risk of severe weather early today. That includes Houston and Austin. However, the most significant storm threat could come Wednesday when the threat of severe storms — a Level 4 of 5 — stretches from eastern Louisiana to western Alabama, the prediction center said.
*Spirit dropping pilots…
(CNN or theSkimm Tue 4-9-24) Spirit Airlines intends to furlough around 260 pilots this fall as the low-cost carrier looks to save cash.
