  • Hollywood slump after strikes  //  Israel's Sunday strike on Rafah gets "global" outrage  //  Trump trial blah blah  //  Severe storms in USA!  //

*Hollywood suffering

(CNN or theSkimm Tue 5-28-24) The summer movie season historically draws the largest theater audiences of the year. However, the 2024 box office is seeing slumping sales following monthslong production delays and strikes that brought Hollywood to a standstill.

**Israel’s Strike on a Rafah Camp Is Prompting Global Outrage

(CNN & theSkimm Tue 5-28-24) Today, Israel reportedly pressed on with its offensive in Rafah after Sunday’s deadly airstrike drew immediate condemnation from world leaders — including Germany’s vice chancellor and French President Emmanuel Macron. At least 45 people were killed in the strike, the Gaza Health Ministry said. The Israeli military said it opened an investigation into the deaths of civilians and that two Hamas officials were killed in the incident. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the strike a “tragic mistake.”

[This] weekend’s strike marked one of the deadliest events in Rafah since Israel began its invasion earlier this month. The Biden admin reportedly told Netanyahu to do more to protect Palestinian civilians. The outcry comes just days after the UN's top court ordered Israel to halt its military offensive in Rafah, and underscores the challenges in enforcing the court's directive. The incident is also likely to further complicate cease-fire negotiations, which are expected to resume this week.

CNN: Global outrage is mounting over Israel’s airstrike on a camp for displaced Palestinians in Rafah that killed at least 45 people and wounded 200 others. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the strike a “tragic error” but reaffirmed that he would not end the war in Gaza until his military’s goals were accomplished. The White House said it is “actively engaging” with officials in Israel to determine what precisely happened.

The deadly strike comes just weeks after President Joe Biden told CNN that he’d halt some shipments of American weapons to Israel if it invades Rafah. Israeli bombings in other areas of Gaza also killed at least six others today, a Palestinian news agency said.

Persecution of the President

(CNN or theSkimm Tue 5-28-24) Former President Donald Trump’s unprecedented criminal hush money trial is expected to be in the hands of jurors this week. The closing arguments set to begin today will allow prosecutors to explain to the 12 jurors how each witness they called and piece of evidence they presented bolsters their case for a guilty verdict on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. After Trump’s attorneys also present their closing arguments, the judge presiding over the case will instruct the jury as to the charges it must consider against the former president. After that, the jurors will begin their deliberations. If convicted, the judge could sentence Trump to probation or a sentence of up to 4 years on each count in state prison, with a maximum of 20 years.

*Severe Storms!

(CNN or theSkimm Tue 5-28-24) Around 47 million people are at risk for severe weather today as powerful storms continue to ravage parts of the central, southern and eastern US. Destructive thunderstorms and tornadoes were responsible for at least 23 deaths over the holiday weekend, including four children, in parts of Kentucky, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma and Alabama. The storms killed 15 in Arkansas and Texas alone. Another five people died in Kentucky. Central and northern Texas appear to face the most serious threat of severe weather today. The area, which includes Austin, Dallas and Fort Worth, could be pelted by large hail, lightning and wind gusts as strong as 80 mph. A few tornadoes may also stir up, according to the National Weather Service.

*Papua New Guinea

(CNN or theSkimm Tue 5-28-24) Thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate Papua New Guinea following a massive landslide last week. As many as 2,000 people are feared to have been buried in the disaster that rattled the mountainous Enga region on Friday. Rescuers have struggled to reach such a remote part of what is already one of Asia’s poorest nations, leaving locals with little choice but to dig through the mountainside with whatever tools they have. The area continues to pose an “extreme risk,” officials said, as rocks continue to fall and the soil is exposed to constant increased pressure. It’s not clear what caused the landslide, but geologists say rainfall could have altered the minerals of the bedrock, weakening the rock that forms the steep hillsides.

**Pope Francis mess

(CNN or theSkimm Tue 5-28-24) Controversy is brewing at the Vatican after Pope Francis allegedly told Italian bishops not to permit gay men to train for the priesthood. Two Italian newspapers claimed that the 87-year-old pontiff made a homophobic slur in a closed-door meeting on May 20. The newspaper articles, which were translated from Italian, claimed the Pope had said there is “frociaggine” — which translates in English to “faggotry” (WHOA, CNN! CALM DOWN!) — in some of the seminaries. A source close to the Pope told CNN that it could also be understood as there is a “gay climate” in the seminaries. CNN reached out to the Vatican to request comment on whether the Pope used the term but has not gotten a response.

*RIP Bill Walton

(CNN or theSkimm Tue 5-28-24) Bill Walton, the basketball Hall of Fame center and colorful commentator died Monday following a prolonged battle with cancer, the NBA announced. He was 71. Among several notable accolades, Walton won two national titles at UCLA and two NBA championships in Portland and Boston.

**Stewardess died at 88

(CNN or theSkimm Tue 5-28-24) QUOTE: “Fly high, Bette.” — American Airlines, mourning the loss of Bette Nash, the world’s longest-serving flight attendant. Nash, who was 88, started the job in 1957 and spent nearly seven decades caring for customers with “warmth, dedication and unparalleled service,” the airline said. (Never officially retired, died in hospice May 17th)

*Investors Are Putting Money Into Elon Musk’s AI Start-Up

(CNN or theSkimm Tue 5-28-24) What's going on: Over the weekend, Elon Musk’s startup xAI announced it raised $6 billion, which Musk said puts the company’s valuation at $24 billion. Although xAI has not disclosed specific plans for the funds, Musk reportedly noted days ago that the company, founded last July, “still has a lot of catching up to do” compared to AI rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic.

What it means: The extra cash narrows the financial gap between xAI and its well-funded competitors, including Anthropic, tech giants like Google, and OpenAI, which Musk co-founded before leaving in 2018.

*Employers No Longer Want to Offer High-Paying Remote Jobs

(CNN or theSkimm Tue 5-28-24) What's going on: Recent analyses of more than 500,000 job postings over the past year revealed that high-paying remote jobs (over $250,000 or more per year) dropped by 95%, while hybrid jobs saw a 60% decline. Now, only about 4% of jobs with a quarter-million-dollar salary are fully remote, falling from 10% a year ago. One of the leaders behind the research reportedly said “managers prefer in-person supervision and visibility.”

What it means: The latest data lines up with what major companies (most recently, banks like Citigroup and HSBC) have been publicly saying for some time: they want employees back IRL. And this could set the stage for a standoff between Americans who prefer remote work (and are willing to accept a pay cut for it) and employers who insist on in-person attendance.

**Hate Trump AND Hate Biden, RME

(CNN or theSkimm Tue 5-28-24) How could the so-called “double haters” shape this year’s presidential election?

Meet: the “double haters.” They are the 16% to 20% of the electorate who have unfavorable views of both President Biden and former President Trump. This group isn’t new, double haters have been around for multiple election cycles. But they can be unpredictable and that’s something that pollsters like Charles Franklin, professor of law and public policy and director of the Marquette Law School Poll, are watching:

“What we don’t know over the next six months is: Does this level of dissatisfaction start to come down as people really look at the alternatives of Biden and Trump and face the reality that that’s their practical choice?”

Double haters are more likely to say they’d vote for a third-party candidate or not vote at all. Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has made progress gaining ballot access in states across the country and is trying to get on the June presidential debate stage. But, if history is any indication, double haters might ultimately opt for one of the two major party candidates.

“In 2016, the double haters broke substantially for Trump, but in 2020 they broke substantially for Biden,” Franklin said.

“That’s no help at all for knowing which way they’ll break this year, except to say that... they actually could be pretty important for determining the winner of the election.”
